The kid couldn’t have been more than seventeen.

In the sallow light of the alley, the red of the bloodstain faded, the puddle beneath him one more oil-slick on the city’s cement ocean. He looked surprised, eyes wide, staring in confusion at something Ed couldn’t see.

“God calling him home or the devil come for his soul,” Ed thought. “I hope it was the first.”

Either way, the kid would never die wrinkled and white-haired in his bed. The 9mm shell had seen to that.

“Any ID?” Lennie asked.

“Nah, just a business card for Carter and Briggs, Attorneys at Law,” Ed answered sadly.

“Well, he sure as hell won’t be needing that lawyer now.”
