Okay, so, obviously it wasn’t the nicest thing she’s ever done. Still, Ivy reasons as she watches the guards lift Topher’s unconscious body, at least she made sure he didn’t hit his head when he fell. (She tells herself that she did that to be nice, so that he wouldn’t have a headache when he came to. She ignores the voice that reminds her it was probably also so that she didn’t get fired for damaging the brilliant mind of the Dollhouse’s most important scientist.)
This certainly isn’t the worst thing she’s ever done. Med school is a competitive place and everyone does all kinds of awful things to stay ahead - stealing homework assignments out of each other’s bags, turning off roommates’ alarm clocks the morning of a big exam. Although, now that she thinks of it, she’s can’t remember a time she ever drugged someone for devious reasons.
She has them put Topher on the couch and then rushes them back out of the lab. The lab, which is now hers for the day. She turns, looks at the empty room, and grins. There's still a tiny pang of guilt, so she looks back at Topher on the couch. He looks much more innocent when he’s sleeping. His young, boyish features combined with the peaceful way he sleeps make him look like someone who would never wipe people out of existence.
It’s a little chilly in the lab, so she goes to the closet to pull out the blanket for him. Hopefully, this will make up for the fact that she ground up sleeping pills and mixed them into his tea. Not that it was a completely selfish act. Topher had been sick for two days, a total sniffling, sneezing mess. He needed rest and simply refused to take a day of, no matter how much she pestered him. Hell, she even offered to make him soup and that was a strong blow to her pride.
She covers him with the blanket, carefully tucking it around his sides. No, she isn’t going to feel guilty for this. She is a scientist. It can’t be her job to be the nurse to a stubborn little boy.
She walks over to the computer, getting ready to start building the imprints of the day, and smiles.
