Dating Cam takes a logical approach.
Vala realizes it early on. She might be prone to impulsive, emotional decisions but it isn’t like she doesn’t think them out. She just doesn’t need as much time as most people. Plans sort of come naturally to her, like a flawless fashion sense and the ability to make her hair do exactly what she wants.
She starts by telling everyone but Cam her intentions. Well, half of them... and a half-truth is better than no truth at all, isn’t it? Of course it is. So she tells anyone that will listen that she’s bored. She tells them that she wants to see more of this planet. She tells them that she’s earned some freedom with the SGC, and that it’s not like she couldn’t have slipped away from supervision at any time, so that basically proves she can be trusted.
Three weeks, five speeches, one powerpoint presentation, and three crocodile tears later Vala has her off-base pass for every other weekend. She clutches the paper proudly to her, and even though it isn’t in her plan, she has to run and show Cam right away.
Then it’s time for step two: dating.
She does date. She dates, and she enjoys it. She’s very adaptable, she’s learned how to be. In the back of her mind she knows that if she hits it off with any of these guys, her priorities might shift. It’s a calculated risk... and really, a win/win for her either way.
But she doesn’t hit it off with any of them, and she’s glad. Glad, and not surprised. They’re (mostly) perfectly enjoyable evenings that serve the dual purposes of proving to Cam that she has options, and letting her do some reconnaissance on standard courting rituals of earthbound humans.
Step three is actually engaging Cameron.
She knows she’s got his attention in a shallow way. He doesn’t always even bother to hide when he’s checking her out. She likes that he trusts her not to be offended. It feels like effort rewarded. Though she wouldn’t go so far as to say everything she does is to please him she might admit to wearing her hair in certain styles because he seems to like it more, or rotating the pants that catch his eye best into a more regular wardrobe rotation.
She seeks him out more. He’s already the closest thing to a friend she has on base with Daniel galavanting around Atlantis half the time and Sam off on her own command. She perches on his desk often enough that eventually he brings in an extra chair just for her. The little nook she used to have in Daniel’s lab eventually gets completely abandoned, and he clears off a shelf and a cabinet drawer for her.
So, when she’s fairly confident that he both appreciates her physically and enjoys her company, she moves on to step four.
Step four, which is really quite easy.
“Cameron, would you like to go on a date?” She asks, along with a bright smile and a cup of coffee she slides across the desk to him.
“What?” He practically does a double take.
“Would you like. To go. On a date. With. Me!” She does a little curtsy on the last word. “I”ve got it all planned out, all you need to do is say yes.”
He recovers from his shock quickly enough, but to Vala’s disappointment doesn’t say yes right off. Instead he just sort of gives her an amused look. “Planned out, hmm?”
“Oh, yes.” She nods enthusiastically. She plucks a folder filled with internet printoffs from her desk. “I thought we’d go have dinner here, and then depending on how the evening is progressing in terms of chemistry and sexual tension we could either go dancing here, or go play laser tag.”
She’s actually sort of hoping for laser tag. Sex is all well and good, but laser tag looks fun. Not to mention, she’s very adept at turning conflict into foreplay and if she had to place a wager she’d say Cameron is, too.
But he still hasn’t answered her and for a moment her stomach flutters with the fear that he’s going to say no. He hasn’t even looked at the printouts!
Then he reaches out and takes the one for the restaurant. She’s even included a map in case he isn’t sure how to drive there. They still don’t trust Vala with any of their terrain vehicles, which is downright silly to her, since they do let her fly actual ships. The automobiles don’t even have weaponry systems! How much damage could she do?
“Been there before,” he says. “I like it. Sounds good. Seven tonight too short notice for you? Otherwise it’ll have to be week after next, since we’re going offworld tomorrow evening.”
“Really?” Her face lights up and she squeals.
Cam laughs, watching her. She decides that isn’t quite good enough so she flings herself onto his lap and gives him a huge hug. “I’ll try and one up Jackson by not letting you get kidnapped this time, too.”
She decides not to mention that she’s been on half a dozen dates in the past two months and none of them ended in kidnapping. She thinks his ego will fare better if he thinks that he’s somehow outperforming Daniel in the date department. (As far as other departments, well, that won’t be hard - she never performed with Daniel that way at all.)
She hops back onto her feet and tucks away the folder with their date plan inside of it. “Hey, where you going?” Cam asks. “It’s not even nine yet, we got work to do.”
“Work?” She makes a face. “You can do that. I am going to pick out something to wear on our date!”
She practically skips away, hearing his laughter behind her.
