Is my eye red? laviergedeneige May 4 2011, 18:21:37 UTC
Once it happened that there were both a taylor and a shoemaker visiting the Kanta Farm here in Veddige in the same time. And you might think that people were talking through evenings on the Kanta Farm those days. That was in the autumn when nights are dark.
One evening they began to talk about ghosts and stuff and the people who are afraid of the dark. And there was a maid in the house. She claimed that she had never in her entire life been afraid of the dark. Those workmen didn’t believe her but she persisted. So they bet that she wouldn’t dare to go alone to the graveyard. The maid said that she would. And so the deal was that she would take a knob from a grave fence. In the old days the graves were fenced in here in Veddige and the poles had turned knobs on the top ends. The knobs were loose so it was easy to take one.
The maid went off at once. It went well for her to get in to the graveyard and take a knob. But when she came out back to the road she heard someone to scream behind her back:
“Is my eye red?”
“Is my arse black?” she answered and walked away without looking back. But that thing came closer, the one that was after her, and then she ran.
When she came in into the house on the Kanta Farm she threw the grave knob on to the shoemaker’s board and said:
“Well now you see that I am not afraid of the dark!”
And so a terrible noise began outside. It hit the walls, it cracked in the lumber, which was on the yard outside, and it screamed.
The maid became very ill and had to stay in bed for three days.
