Every Day's The Perfect Day For a Wedding

Jul 12, 2007 04:26

The other night I saw a couple of mortgage brokers get married to the tune of $60,000, for what I hope was their dream wedding. Gaudy and ostentatious might be an appropriate substitute for dream, but hey, it wasn’t my wedding.

Prior to that, I watched a man propose to his girlfriend with a fine display that probably cost more than many people’s weddings. His ring alone cost $5000, which he haggled down from $7000, when it was actually probably worth closer to 11 or 12k. He rented a limousine, a tent, horses, and a guide, set up a picnic under the Hollywood sign, and flew in their parents. It was sweet. It was romantic. It was the proposal of his now-fiancee’s dreams. But oh my God, all I could think of was, if this is what he envisions for the proposal, what the heck is their dream wedding going to look like?

So that got me wondering, can everyday people even afford to have the wedding of their dreams anymore? The wedding of my dreams involves less than 50 people total out on a beach, or by the mountains, or in a stone church, or a castle museum. I imagine myself totally revamping the teeny, cool dress my great-grandmother wore for her wedding or finding a dress on eBay for under $75.

But I’m wondering if I’m being terribly naïve thinking I could even pull off this quaint, intimate wedding I envision without completely breaking the bank. So, friends, I know several of you have been planning weddings recently and many of these weddings seem quite lovely and also quite wallet-friendly. How are you doing it? How are people you know doing it? Seriously, I’d love to write up something about real people having fairy tale weddings while keeping their heads above water.
