Jul 22 - Do you think celebrities deserve as much recognition, attention, and money as we, as a society, give them? What do you think it says about our cultural values?
No, I don't think celebrities deserve as much money as we give them. But their income is a product of the system. They entertain millions of people, and we give them lots of money for doing so. As for recognition and attention, when we feel a connection with a character they play or a song they perform, we feel like we know them, and we become interested in their daily lives. It is an interesting aspect of our minds that we can engage in such one-sided emotional relationships.
Jul 10(2/2) - Would you rather work at a job that you enjoy but pays little or work at a miserable job that pays a lot?
Definitely a job that I enjoy but pays little. There is nothing money can buy that makes up for being miserable for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I think that everyone should find a job that makes them want to get out of bed in the morning, that engages them and gives them a sense of meaning.
Jul 8 - Which song lyrics send shivers down your spine and really hit you emotionally?
Lyrics are less potent to me than music. Yoko Kanno's
Garden of Everything and
Ai Oboete Imasuka (Do You Remember Love?) ~ Bless the Little Queen are two that first come to mind that I only listen to when I want to immerse myself in them emotionally.
Jul 5 - President Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." What can people do today to show support for the country?
I would like to see a new ethic of acting for the common good of all today and in the future by consuming less and consuming from sources that are renewable. (See
"Humanity would need five earths if everyone lived like Americans",
The Story of Stuff). I'm afraid that this isn't possible, as it conflicts with our desire to maximize our personal well-being and to have as much as our peers have, and so I would like to see policies put in place that result in us paying the true cost of our actions.
