Apparently I'm still not following the news enough. It took
Google's black homepage to alert me that today major cities around the world are turning out the lights from 8p-9p tonight in support of Earth Hour. And Phoenix is one of the flagship cities.
"World Wildlife Fund is partnering with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and community leaders to help make history. Phoenix is honored to be one of four major cities in the nation-along with Atlanta, San Francisco, and Chicago-leading this landmark international event. Public buildings, landmarks, and major corporate offices will take part, and residents throughout Phoenix and its surrounding cities are encouraged to participate in this groundbreaking celebration."

Earth Hour's Phoenix page "Both Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project are on board. So are major facilities that are usually bathed in light. Chase Field, which has a spring-training game on Saturday night, will close the roof and turn off the outside marquee. The exterior lights will go off at US Airways Center."

AZRepublic "Join the Darkness"Phoenix to go dark for 1 hour tonight ASU's involvement Restaurants participating and other things to do in the dark "The worldwide blackout is meant to demonstrate how global collaborative efforts can inspire positive change for the environment. In 2007, the first Earth Hour in Sydney, Australia, succeeded in prompting more than 2.2 million people and more than 2,100 businesses to turn off their lights."
"Join thousands of people across Phoenix-and millions of people around the world-to make a bold statement about climate change [today] from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Turn out your non-essential and non-emergency lights for one hour. Earth Hour."
