It's that time of the semester where I have a billion things to do again. A test last week, two tests this week. I only have one test and three more papers until finals so...woo?
I saw the Hunger Games on Saturday! I'm not a huge fan of the books (fun, but the ending was disappointing), but I really liked the movie.
I thought Jennifer Lawrence was a fabulous Katniss. I couldn't really connect to Katniss much in the books because of how cold she was, but I think Jen managed to be quiet and introspective while still retaining a warmth that someone who cares so much about her town has. I mean, making Katniss so distant just doesn't really work for me when she loves her sister so much and has a best friend and cares about his family, etc etc, so I was really glad with how much humanity Jennifer put into her, with the smiles and the jokes and the friendships.
In general, I thought the casting was really great? I'm pretty much the only one, but Haymitch didn't really fit how I thought (I guess I was imagining an older, harder, Jim Beaver type?), but he grew on me. I also wasn't crazy about Cinna. Not that Lenny Kravitz didn't do a good job with the material. Part of me thinks it didn't work for me because theres not much to his character other than being helpful to Katniss and maybe I was still expecting something more? He and Jennifer had MAD CHEMISTRY though. I came out of the movie shipping them. I honestly thought they were gonna make out and would have welcomed that. I'm not really a fan of Katniss/Gale or Katniss/Peeta, so I guess I'll ship Katniss/Cinna. But oh man, am I glad they took out most of the Katniss/Peeta prostitution make out for food stuff. I think it's an interesting idea, but it was not done well.
The additions that weren't in the book were super fantastic. The book was definitely limited by being solely from Katniss' POV and the scenes with Snow and Seneca and District 11 were done really well and added a lot, as far as I'm concerned. I hope the rest of the movies use those kinds of additions. The writing in general in the movie was a few steps above the book; it's pretty clear that Collins is more comfortable with screen writing than novels.
Costumes and make up were fantastic. I wouldn't doubt them getting an Oscar nom. Music and cinematography were also excellent. My heart was beating so fast in the beginning, I was freaking out. The tension was really there.
After I saw the movie, I donated blood and got a free movie ticket! So now I can go again if I want. \o/
Thing I found on tumblr:
Avengers Genderswap Fanart. I'm super excited for the movie (it was my favorite trailer before THG), but I would watch the fuck out of this movie.
While I'm talking about artistic things I love, I am pimping this webcomic (which I may have pimped before, whatever, it deserves another):
El Goonish Shive. It's a fun, high school sci-fi fantasy LGBT dramady. It starts off slow (and the beginning is really anime-based it eventually spreads out to the rest of geekdom), but it's been running for ten years and there are a lot of really in depth storylines that feature magic, genderswap (TONS of genderswap), coming out stories, alien technology, and cats. The cats aren't a huge deal, but it's nice when people have cats as pets. There's eventually 8 main characters and the girls outnumber the guys. Almost half the main characters are gay or bisexual and there have relationships that are just as important as the straight relationships. The art starts out pretty ameteurish, with a newspaper comic fashion, but the art and layouts really evolve over time. Oh, and as much as it does really good stuff, it is still a webcomic written by a man for entertainment. It's not really super social justice warrior friendly, especially in the beginning, but it really respects the female characters and it's all in good fun. Now that I've talked about this almost as much as I've talked about The Hunger Games, you should really read it!
