One possibility is get a cheap wireless router. They can run from 35 to 150 bucks and they can free you from having to have cables across the apartment (that is provided your computer has wireless capability and most computers today do). A wireless router would probably cost less than the cables you would have to buy. Linksys is probably the biggest name in Routers. I have an old wireless version we got about 3 years ago. They can be a little bit of a challenge to set up but once they are set up they do very well. Really tech support can walk you through the setup process.

actually, even if your computer doesn't have wireless built in, you can get a USB wifi adapter. I've got one for my desktop (the router is in the living room) and it works pretty well.
