Michael -

I'm sorry to hear that America is so dull. I had hoped it would be an exciting place. But then, I suppose staying with grandparents hardly makes things fast-paced and adventure-filled. Still, I have to approve of your choice of activities... And, yes, you really are completely horrible! Here I am, having the most wonderful time in a nice, exotic place with people I like very much, and your owl comes, and all I want is to be back in England, or, better still, Scotland, and with you.

Horrible, and wonderful, too, though I shouldn't tell you that, as I have experience with the swelling egos of teenage boys at the drop of a compliment. It's true, though.

I wish very much you were here, too. I think you'd like it. It really is the most fascinating place. And maybe it's okay, the sleeping trouble, because it means I'm just awake for more of it - and able to write you when your owl arrives. What is the time difference? I think it's something like 12 hours, but I don't know. I wonder. How strange to think of being wide awake here while you're sleeping somewhere in Florida, and the reverse.

The world is such a strange thing. And how odd, how very strange indeed, to think there's half of it between us. O brave new world, that has such in't... And yet you're not here.

Thank you, for saying I'd be beautiful in a sari. We'll see, though, won't we? And of course I'm bringing something back for you... Though, I wonder, is there anything in particular you'd like? Because if there is, I want to be certain you get that.

Have you really got hurricanes headed your way? How frightening! I can't imagine what that must be like. Has one hit where you are? Oh, you horrible boy, you know I'll be worried about you now. And this owl. Poor owl, crossing the world and flying into an hurricane. But do pet Horatio and give the fierce little thing my best, though I doubt he'll care at all. I bet he was simply adorable, hiding under the bed like that.

I'm sure your grandparents are wonderful. And I'll be sure to tell your parents hello for you. Come to think of it, I think I should like to meet them, so that would be nice, wouldn't it? They sound very interesting. My parents aren't particularly interesting, but I love them very much, so they're interesting to me. My sister's a holy terror, but you'll meet her next year and find that out for yourself, unless you manage to hide yourself quite securely for the duration of term.

I hope this was soon enough, and that the eagerness of my reply will be excused, as well.

Yours,
Lavender]
