Alllllrighty.
So I've watched The Purple Piano Project twice now, and I've watched the Klaine scenes and It's Not Usual like WAY too many times to be probably normal, so I feel like I can react properly. (Be warned: I'm going scene-by-scene, so this will be potentially really freaking long.)
First, let's just get this out of the way: I do not like Will Schuester. Like, at all. First season: liked him okay-ish, thought he had good intentions but was just clueless. My problem is that he isn't GETTING a clue and I do not care to know any more about his love life thank-you-very-much. Emma is WAY too good for him. He is skeezy. That is all. (Oh, and the scene in Principal Figgins' office where he totally spouts off about red lights and green lights? TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE, THANKS A LOT WILL.)
Also to get out of the way: I miss Sam soooo much, and I am not a fan of LaMarcus, or whatever they've decided that his name is. I don't particularly like what they're doing with Mercedes, either - she seemed out of character to me, and it's not because she's got a man. I am side-eyeing this like WHOA. I want her to be happy and I want this to be an amazing season for her, but I am reeeeally skeptical of the way they're going about it. Wel will see. (I am still a Samcedes shipper. CHORD WHY DID YOU HAVE TO LEAVE US???)
Alright, now let's get down to the nitty gritty. I think the purple piano project was an idiotic idea. Mr. Schue remains clueless. CLUELESS. Kurt's "Why is that t-rex eating the Jew?" comment was golden. And I will forever miss Lauren - I hope they do something great with her later this season.
The scene in Emma's office was ... I don't know. I liked it in some ways (the Me and My Hag phamplet? HELLO, MOST AMAZING THING EVER. Kurt is collecting quite the selection of phamplets as of late....) But I hate that she was squashing their dreams. I know she was just trying to be realistic but ... ugh. THEY HAVE TO MAKE IT.
Oh Sue. For a few seconds every season, I think you might be growing a heart, but then ... nope. You make comments about how "Chopsticks" must be the national anthem of "whatever country [Mike and Tina] come from" and I lose hope again.
ALRIGHT. COFFEESHOP SCENE. THE FLIRTING. THE EYE SEX. THE INNUENDOS THAT AREN'T REALLY INUENDOS ABOUT WINNING BUT MY BRAIN WENT THERE IN A HEARTBEAT. NO. MORE. BABY. PENGUIN. (Seriously, Blaine's face when Kurt says "And I know what that does to you when I win" totally screams "Okay, yeah, I admit it, you are right. It totally turns me on.") I was squealing through this entiiiiire thing, and it is my head!canon that they left there and went and made out in Kurt's (or Blaine's) car. Or at one of their houses. Or somewhere. But there was making out involved. BUT. My one problem with this scene ... Kurt is talking about their budding romance, and he totally says "buddying" romance. It irks me.
QUINNNNNN. Can I just say how excited I am for this storyline? I NEVER thought they did her story justice - it is not that easy to get over giving your baby up for adoption. There are a TON of issues you have to deal with. Clearly she did not deal with them and instead dated a 40-year-old skater? Okay. But yeah ... I'm totally intrigued. (And if and when she does come back to Glee... can we keep the pink hair? Because I kind of love it.)
Skipping over the Schuester scenes because I just honestly do not care.......
Okay, scene with Becky/Santana in Sue's office: I LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. that Sue insinuates knowing about Santana's sexuality. LOVE. (Partly because Sue has been more accepting and friendlier to the LGBT population of the school than Will will ever be - I find that interesting and kind of wonderful, actually.) I will be REALLY interested to see what they do with Santana this season.
I loved the We Got the Beat performance - and can I just say, BRITTANY! I loved her. The food fight afterward was one of my favorite parts of the entire episode for the sheer factor of Kurt shielding himself with a cafeteria tray. SO HILARIOUS. Chris Colfer is AMAZING.
Sugar scene: ear-splitting. I find it impressive that someone can make themselves sing that badly. I see this coming back to bite Will in the ass at some point.
Teacher's lounge: BIESTE! YOU ARE EATING A ROTISSERIE CHICKEN FOR LUNCH. I LOVE YOU.
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead: at first I was on the fence about this performance (aside from Kurt's outfit, which is kind of gloriously awesome with a twist of WHAT??), but upon second viewing, I really kind of love it. And, as
jst_klo has pointed out many times, Kurt's munchkin walk is quite possibly the cutest thing ever. I almost felt like Rachel was channeling Kristen Chenoweth with the inflections that she was using, and I love that.
Glitterbombing scene: I defer to the brilliant and much-wiser-than-i-on-subjects-such-as-this
rm to talk about this, but I will say that when they started showing those try-out shots, a little part of me was BEGGING Blaine to show up for cheerleading try-outs and knock the socks off of everyone.
Okay, the hallway scene, AKA the Massive Amounts of Sexual Frustration for Everyone scene: I just... I can't even. I was FLAILING this entire time. There was so much eye sex going on at that locker that I may or may not have been impregnated. The FLIRTING. Their FACES. Kurt's complete and total FREAK-OUT, and the hearts in Blaine's eyes. THE HUG. BEST. HUG. EVER. TO. APPEAR. ON. GLEE. And then It's Not Unusual happened, and my ovaries were destroyed forever. I can't even think of coherent comments to make on that. Except - STARKID SUNGLASSES, I SAW YOU FROM THE TIME BLAINE WAS WALKING DOWN THE HALL. And that was a pretty damn good catch by Kurt - I wonder how many takes it took for Chris to catch them? (Maybe he's secretly really good at sports!) I'm going to just make one comment on Blaine's clothes this episode, and say UNF.
That next Hummelberry scene was SO SO STRONG. Because it was realistic, and I thought Lindsay's performance was actually really great, and it's true - Kurt and Rachel are really super talented and they want it really, really badly, but there are SO MANY PEOPLE who are really super talented, and I think it is good that (Rachel especially) was brought down a few notches. Because Kurt is good at persisting and surviving and facing adversity of all sorts because he has grown skin made of steel, but Rachel has not. And the Hummelberry scene in the car? AMAZING. We were talking about that last night, and it seems that Kurt has learned a few things about giving inspirational speeches from Daddy!Burt. It was good, and my love for Hummelberry has never, ever, ever been stronger. I hope they go to New York and show those bitches who's boss :)
Okay, skipping to the choir room - upon my THIRD viewing of this, I noticed - BLAINE HAS ON BOAT SHOES. LET ME LOVE YOU DOWN. Ahem. So. This was actually the only scene I wasn't thrilled with, mainly because Blaine is so PUPPY. He has the same tone of voice that he's using in the Somewhere Only We Know scene from last season, and I think it's his "Blaine is giving a speech" tone, but it sounds too much like "PLEASE LIKE ME PLEASE LIKE ME" and his FACE. And then ... FINN. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Don't be a douche, please. And KURT, WHERE WERE YOU TO BACK YOUR BOYFRIEND UP? But upon viewing it for the third time, I did notice a little sarcastic note in Blaine's "Did I do something wrong?" reply, so I think bb can take care of himself alright. I just ... I'm not sure how to reconcile the Dapper!Blaine who can sing songs about sex toys and still be oh-so-suave and this ... I don't know, happy floppy-eared puppy Blaine that we are seeing now. I don't hate it, but I'd kind of like Blaine the Rockstar to make an appearance at some point.
You Can't Stop the Beat was musical gold. I LOVE THAT SONG. And Blaine did a cartwheel and did some of the most adorable dancing I've ever seen, and Mike ROCKED IT and it was so, so, so good. (Except, I wish they'd not cut Kurt's part of the song from the performance. Because he is awesome. And I reeeeally wish we'd gotten to see Link!Blaine in there somewhere but ... oh well. Can't have everything.)
Overall impression: LOVE. Things I wish had been there that weren't: backstory about Blaine's transfer. His discussion with his parents about it. BLAINE'S PARENTS IN GENERAL. One last scene with the Warblers (MY CREYS.) Burt Hummel, anywhere. (Though we're getting him next week, so I'm more okay with that.) Kurt singing more.
But yeah. OMG SORRY THIS IS SO LONG!!!
Best thing about this: we get to do it again in a week! And I have a lovely download that I'm going to watch on repeat until then. WOOOO!!!
I AM SO GLAD THAT GLEE IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
