It is here that Webster’s use of language and more specifically of metaphor becomes important. The Duchess of Malfi is stuffed almost to bursting with bird metaphors (although despite this stuffing, no turkey is mentioned) which are used by the characters, in conjunction with a judicious sprinkling of sententiae, to elucidate points that they are trying to make.
