So it was a sad day yesterday....
The best memories of my childhood was spent at our cottage on big blue lake. The cottage was bough by my great grandfather many, many years ago and has remained a summer oasis for my family and relatives. Summer was filled with fun adventures with all of my cousins and family. We would play games in the water all day long, roast marshmellows and night, and lay on the docks and stare up at the clear night sky. The stars seemed so much brighter than anywhere else, with the milky way and shooting stars clearly visable. The water is crystal clear and massive pine trees surround the lake. I remember when i was about 8 one of the trees was rotting and we had to cute it down. We counted the rings inside and dated the tree back way before christopher columbus ever landed in america. The area just has so much natural beauty that is undescribable. There is plenty of wildlife that we have seen, such as deer, turkey, beavers, swans, plenty of turtles, blue heron, and yes even bald eagles. A family of them has lived on the lake for as long as I can remember. It's a haven for nature something that was untouched by man and corporate - but i feel that may all change.
The lake is about a mile and a half long, with 2/3 of it belonging to the owassippe boy scouts from the Chicago area. What makes the lake so beautiful is a direct result of the boy scout's respect and preservation of nature. With 2/3 of the shoreline all natural, only used by them for hiking, canoeing, and sailing. They own 5,000 acres of the area and it remains the oldest in the nation, dating back to 1911.
Well as of Thursday, the land for sold for 19 million dollars. :( It hurts me to think that a price can be put on such a timeless beauty. I don't know what will be done, but I know it will never again be the same. I am assuming that it will be sold for houses, businesses, and corporations...and probably a walmart. They are a heartless monopoly.
some pics of the lake...as it will be remembered
