I saw someone in the mirror today.
I stopped for a moment to stare,
For I'd never seen her in this place before.
She sometimes pops up in my old photographs-
her complexion clearer than mine
her hair more controllable than mine
her smile shining brighter than mine
surrounded by my closest friends
in my dearest memories
being hugged
kissed
appreciated
enjoyed
-Perhaps she just does it to make me jealous.
But today, she was in my mirror,
Staring back at me as I stared at her
And in that moment, we were equals.
I saw Beauty in my mirror today.
I leaned down over the sink for a while
To brush my teeth
And when I looked back up, she was still there.
Smiling, I ran to get my makeup,
Eager, for once, to step out of the door and into the world
But with each stroke of each brush and puff and applicator
I watched her slowly fade away.
I stared into the mirror
This time at my usual reflection
and I laughed.
My attention shifted to the blemishes and imperfections
And I spent the rest of the day wondering
Of what beauty there is to find in the artificial.
