Talked to a newly-minted Pelican the other day. In a separate conversation, she was talking to someone about autocrating a kingdom event, and the person told her "I want to make a name for myself."
She and I both thought that horrid. We agreed that "making a name" should not enter into running a good event.
What I didn't say is that, to my eyes, acquiring a peerage is still about who you know--not what you do.
And that is abhorrent on so many levels to myself, I can't even begin to explain.
I have watched individuals deliberately do everything it takes to become a peer. And the changes they went through in public and private life.
It's not always a good or graceful transformation.
When a peerage becomes the brass ring you win as you ride around the merry-go-round of public service or teaching/learning, what's the purpose?
Katherine, in one of her long-ago letters, mentioned that nowadays, she wouldn't qualify for a peerage. (This, from one of the first Pelicans created--and the one that introduced fealty as part of that peerage!)
