Oh, Dr Who fandom, did I ever say you were crazy and I was frightened of you? I was a fool. HP's got nothing on you, baby.

I dunno. I feel like I have thoughts on everything, but mostly they boil down only to, "Dear, sweet mother of God." With the extended version of, "It's frightening, and it's not always a joke; sometimes people really are crazy, and sometimes other people get caught up in that. and my god, is anyone on the internet who they really say they are?"

I think because, as a rule, I'm not the most active fandom member ever, and because the corner of fandom I occupy tends to be saner (seem saner, anyway) I miss this, but this last few days have been a real eye opener. It seems like one mistake (unintentional or just stupidity) can open up a world of trouble, and once fandom decides your a target, well, there isn't much chance of dodging the wrath. And equally, 'cause it is hive mind, if fandom doesn't want to see something, it probably won't see it, which is what seems to have happened with the msscript thing -- up to a point, anyway; a lot of the credit belongs squarely to her for being the most incredible nutjob.

It's not gonna change anything, for me, 'cause, again, see not most active fan, but I think I will be a little more aware before launching into a discussion when I'm not sure of any of the participants, at least for the next few weeks.

And, as a side note, the BNF "little people" dichotomy (if it is a dichotomy and not an exaggeration) still baffles me -- though, for the record, using less ridiculous terminology in the debates might be good. It seems like, in 2003 anyway, there was a huge premium placed on being a BNF and being friends with one, and I'm not sure that's healthy for any group. Mostly, in certain discussions I've seen, it feels as if BNF's aren't seen as fans like everyone else, and I don't know why that is, or how you fix that, but it seems odd, to me.

Meh. I'm just waffling now, I think.

In other better news, for the 3 of you who might not have seen this already, the delightful and delicious musesfool wrote Blessings Against the Thunder for me! It's lovely Mal/River piece, with tension and a perfect Mal voice. And guns! It has guns and shooting, which is never a bad in fiction, as far as I'm concerned.

fandom it is scary
