Well, there's Danny and Rusty + nuns, there's the Mal/River you mentioned, I'm sure you have some Remus/Sirius left in you, and the Zoe during OoG story, for starters...

That is quite a list, yes. Getting right on it, ma'am. *g*

No, he pretty much just left them there to fend for themselves with no plan to get back to them. I think our Doctor is a bit fickle at times. Sort of like those birds that like shiny things. The worst part is that I am sure Rose knew exactly what he'd done.

Well, huh. That's not what I was hoping you'd say, 'cause I think there's being fickle and then there's being, you know, insane. He basically gave up everything to save one woman he loved, and was willing to let the other woman he loves (however you choose to see that love) die or be stranded in time.

It just doesn't quite fit with the Doctor of The Parting of the Ways, for me. Although, yes, I'm sure she did know, and she certainly took it pretty damn well -- much better than I would've, that's for sure. *g*

Heh. Um. Sorry? I haven't seen any other interpretations in the other comments I've read about it. I think part of it is that Reinette was the only person alive who really *knew* everything he'd been through. He's not much of a talker and to have someone know and understand him without him having to explain it was probably a pretty big deal for him. I also think that, after School Reunion, he's probably a little messed in the head about what to do with Rose.

As for Rose, she's had quite a rude awakening these last two weeks about where she fits into The Doctor's life and how precarious the position of his companion can be. I think they are building toward some sort of crossroads for the two of them. It should be interesting at least. If not also incredibly painful.

Yeah, there is that, I guess, but it still seems a pretty big jump from that to abandoning Rose, you know? And after School Reunion it seems like he should have been more reluctant to just disappear.

Still, I agree the last couple of eps have been all about showing Rose that her position might not be quite what she thought, so there probably is something coming. I don't really see that there can't be, to be honest.

Oh, and shaggydogstail has an alternative theory in these comments that is kind of an explanation, even if we don't entirely understand it. :)

I think he was planning to Do Something Clever with Time (to use the technical phrase). I'm sure he says something about being stuck in Versailles for three thousand years, yet the shaceship (and the Tardis) are in, I think, the 52nd Century? Something much further ahead than three thousand years, anyway.

So...he knew his future (past?) self would be in Versaille in 3 thousand years because he'd already been there, so he'd be able to get in the TARDIS and get back to Rose within about five minutes of leaving...or something. Except, if that's what he was planning he'd know if it had already happened. Argh. This is why I hate time travel. Fucking paradoxes.

I don't understand the time gaps between the spaceship and France either. Everytime he popped back to the ship for five minutes, years had gone by on Earth, but when he spent the evening in Versailles he was gone for five and a half hours.

Bottom line? After much waffle, I have nothing.

Heh. See, I like your interpretation a lot, except that my brain kind of threatens to explode if I think about it too much. Which is generally the case with time in this series, actually, but it certainly would explain a lot. Leaving her like that without a word seems very bizarre if he didn't know.

Although there's that whole thing about time not running in straight lines from the first series, so would he have known? Because it was possible for Rose to die even before she'd been born, so... And that would suggest that he always knows the outcomes, which he doesn't. Or does it suggest that? These are the circles I go in.

And I didn't understand the time jumps either. I think I'd need to rewatch it again and pay attention to the details rather than just to the plot. Alas that I did not tape it.

Yeah, see I like the vague idea that it was millenia for him, but not for Rose, but once I try to think about the details...no, instant migraine. It all gets dangerously close to Quantum Physics and other complicated stuff that I do not understand.

I'd quite like to just gloss over the details and pretend that's what's going on. Stupid logic keeps getting in the way, though.

If I'd taken that degree in quantum physics we wouldn't be in this mess, you know.

I'm never getting a summer like this again

Oh, yes! Take advantage of it and have a blast. I would kill to have a week like that -- though I suspect after a few days I'd miss my kids -- and you are absolutely right to relax and make the most of it.

Enjoy!

Aw, thank you. I'll probably get bored eventually, too, but for now it's a very nice feeling.

I suspect I'll be spamalicious for a while

That's excellent news! And yes, go for it and have a fantastic summer. *thinks fondly of first post-graduation summer spent on the dole*

Heh. Yes, I am thinking of signing on while I sort myself out. I mean, if nothing else it seems like the sort of thing you should be able to say you've done at least once. Plus, you know, money, for eating and that sort of thing. *g*
