"Katie, why won't you marry me?"
"Because I'm afraid?"
"Afraid? Of what?"
"Oh Daniel. Of it going wrong. I know it doesn't make much sense, but I had so many hopes in my first marriage, and they all turned bitter so quickly. I've forgotten how to hope. And what is a marriage without hope?"
"A wise man once said that, 'Hope is a talent like any other.' You have to practice hope, Katherine. The kernel is a gift, but it has to be tended and nurtured to grow."
"How do I do that?"
"One step at a time, love. You've been nurturing our love for the past two years. Doesn't that put some sort of hope in your heart."
"Yes, but,"
"No buts, what's the next step?"
"Prune away the fear."
"Exactly."
"I, all right. I'll agree to marry you, but you can't rush me."
"I won't, I promise."
"It might take years before I've gotten rid of enough fears to say I do. Can you wait that long?"
"If it takes forever, I'll wait that long."
