Prompt: "But the window?!???"

Notes: Right now I'm leaning on this not being canon. If it does show up it will be in one of the interlude updates. Also, Jason, Nick, and the aliens they're traveling with have no clue about Windows vs Apple (lucky them?).
After a complete tour of the engineering area of the ship, Jason and Nick felt like they'd attended both a lecture and a field trip. It was fascinating, and they'd learned so much more than they could ever use in several lifetimes. However, there was one thing that stood out, well two things actually, two things that completely baffled them.
Their guide, Fenstr, turned toward them. "That is engineering. You are free to stay down here as long as your presence does not disturb, but do you have any questions?"
"Well, now that you mention it, we were a little perplexed by a couple of things with your computers." Nick put forth.
"Oh?"
"Yeah," Jason jumped in, "what's with the window and the apple?"
"Exactly, you have a window frame and an apple inside that on every computer and we just can't figure out what they do, or why they're there."
"Ahhh, you have discovered our enigma. I am afraid I can not answer your question."
"Top Secret?" Jason guessed.
"No, nothing so clandestine. We do not understand their function ourselves. In fact we had hoped that perhaps your family knew."
"If you don't know what they're for, why do you have them in every single computer in engineering?"
"It is something in the way of an experiment. We intercepted a transmission three of your years ago, where a vigorous debate was being held between the benefits of using apples or windows on computers. Both sides had strong, even zealous, supporters, as well as strong arguments for their position. Our captain decided that we would use both, and see if it improved anything."
"And has it?" Jason asked.
"The apples are quite delicious and easily replaced, and the windows keep them out of the way. But so far the computers themselves do not seem to notice."
