A Thousand.

It was sudden.
Like a thousand startled birds
Rushing into the sky.

Your strangely charming words assured
And so I never did ask why.

It was discovery.
One so unexpected
Because I had never felt before---
Unless it went undetected---
Behind a creaking door.

But when you flew away,
The delicate condition of my soul
Withered day by day.
A cracking puncture with each knoll
A piercing voice, you said you'd stay!
You said you'd stay!
And so I waited.

Yet here I am.

Perforated.

Like a thousand startled birds,
Who are too afraid to land at first,
They circle once or twice
And then, with reassuring words
Land again upon the ice.
