Another hectic day.  They fled like children caught in crossfire to their sanctuary.  As they crossed the green wrought iron threshold, the sounds, sirens, and choking city stench that rose from the asphalt ground in the heat faded into soft bird conversation and green.

On this particular day, the sun had drifted directly above a hole in the atmosphere, turning their cool green sanctuary of trees and fountains into a desert oasis.  The two girls, both wearing flowing dresses of bright spring colours, floated in the ocean of green, lounging lazily surround by trees creaking a chorus of 'hellos' and birds chirping animatedly to each other in greeting.

"I feel like we're in a large oven!"

The first girl cried this suddenly, startling the second girl from her floating reverie on the emerald sea.

"Do you feel stuffed like a turkey in an oven at Christmas?" the second girl asked, propping herself up on her elbows and lifting her sunglasses.  She squinted against the sudden brilliance.

"Yes, I think that describes it."

The trees waved their sagging arms slowly and sagely, welcoming the two girls with drooping, wrinkled smiles and centuries of wisdom.  Their bodies were long and aged, their fingers brittle looking but strong.

A hunched fir softly cracked and creaked.

"It's saying 'I love you'.  I love you too, tree!" The second girl called loudly, and the tree danced for them in the wind in reply.

"I love you, too!" the second girl echoed, throwing her arms up into the air to dance with the sage.

But then their hour was up, and the two girls followed the stone path back out into the world, taking a final pure breath of the sacred air.  They hoped that breath of air would last them until the next time they would be able to escape into the silence.  They pulled the iron gate shut behind themselves, and departed into the world.
