Apparently, March 25 was Tolkien Reading Day. So in honor of my other fandom, here are my answers to this meme. XD Feel free to swipe and remember the Tolkien lurve. XD
What books by JRRT have you read?
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, Farmer Giles of Ham
What is your favorite book?
As a child the Hobbit was my favorite, but as an adult, it's the trilogy
What is your fave line from any Tolkien book?
Gosh, there are so many. I'm typing out the first one I found underlined in my copy of Fellowship of the Ring (FOTR):
"Elves may thrive on speech aline, and Dwarves endure great weariness; but I am only an old hobbit, and I miss my meal at noon." - Bilbo at the council of Elrond
Who/What introduced you to LOTR?
Many people had to introduce me to LOTR over the years. First copy I laid eyes on belonged to my sister's first boyfriend. I was curious, but I was turned off by the cover so I didn't read it (laughs). The real time, however, due to one of my best friends who insisted I read it all before we watched the films. This friend of mine was a hardcore Marxist at the time, a fellow literature major, a full-time activist who turned up his nose at any literature without a social message... but he insisted. And so I read.
How many times have you read LOTR?
At least once a year since 2000, sometimes twice a year.
For those of us who reread the trilogy: what new things did you notice in your last re-reading?
I haven't started re-reading, but I noticed my paperback copies are getting really yellow and dusty. It's time to upgrade to acid-free paper, baby.
Have you seen the LOTR movies?
Uh, yeah.
How many times and which edition?
I saw them all, at least once, in the cinema. I watched the extended editions of all three at least once, but probably the FOTR the most times.
Who is your LOTR crush?
Frodo. Mwahahahaha. Don't tell anyone, but I ♥ Elijah Wood.
What changes from book to film did you not like?
ARWEN! Fuck that shit, yeah. And I'm still kind of sore that Ragadast didn't even make a cameo.
What is it with the LOTR movies you didn't like?
I didn't like that they changed the original ending of Return of the King (ROTK). While the scouring of the Shire was anti-climatic, it served three purposes: it showed that evil does not die (Saruman), that hobbits can become war-like (Merry and Pippin FTW), and while the war was won, the personal battle was lost (Frodo).
I also hated the scene they gave to Arwen, the chase scene before they reached Rivendell. I mean, that was totally WTF. That was Frodo's last moment of absolute defiance in the face of the Nine, and they had to take it away from Elijah Wood to give Liv Tyler something to do. Years later, it still rankles.
Favorite parts of the trilogy (book and/or film)?
In the movie, that awe-inspiring moment when they see the monuments of the kings of old. (I'm getting rusty on my Tolkien-lore, I swore I used to know their names, even the name of the river.) Argh.
For sheer fangirly squeeing purposes, I still love the Houses of Healing chapter.
Gandalf's fall in Moria still makes me freak out, too (both versions.)
What is your most unforgettable LOTR scene in the movie?
I loved all the scenes with the Ents, and I loved how one of them was on fire in the battle scene. They got that absolutely right ♥
It's unforgettable for the wrong reasons... when Galadriel went all green. Mwahahahaha! I think Peter Jackson and Cate Blanchett overdid that scene. Whenever we see the "Galadriel Transfixed" toy on sale, my friends and I just guffaw.
If you are a member of the fellowship, who would you be?
I'd probably be Pippin, the useless one who wants to eat all the time.
Who among the character in LOTR you could most relate to?
Sam.
Eowyn, when she said that she fears a cage.
Faramir, for being the dutiful son to a horrible parent.
Who among the character in LOTR you hate or maybe dislike most?
I don't hate Arwen in the books, because she actually does a lot (in secret) to boost Strider/Aragorn's morale, but in the movies... waah! NOOO!
What's your favorite short story from Tolkien?
Is Farmer Giles of Ham considered a short story?
Who / What is Garm?
Crap, this meme hit me with something I don't know! *pout*
Who is your favorite hobbit?
Frodo, of course.
Who is your favorite dwarf from the Hobbit?
It's been years since I've read the Hobbit, hooo boy. I think it was the twins.
Have you tried watching all Extended Edition Movies of LOTR in one day?
No, but I know some friends who have.
What is your nerdest / geekiest LOTR moment?
In cooking school, someone stole my chef's knife. This was a big deal, because professional knives are expensive and they came as part of the school uniform. Apparently there was a klepto in class, and I was really upset about having to buy a new one. So in a fit of self-righteous, geeky anger, I had all of my knives engraved with LOTR names. From then on, whenever someone tried to borrow one of my knives, they had to ask for the knife by name.
"Laurie, can I please borrow... uh, Elendil? Oh, I mean, uhm... Elessar."
Mwahahahaha.
(Hey, if I was in cooking school while I started reading Bleach, the chef's knife would probably be engraved Zangetsu.)
First thing you will ask/tell JRRT when you meet him in the afterlife?
"Hey, did you and C.S. Lewis ever get Greek with each other?"
(He'd probably dump the dottle of his pipe on my head if I asked that.)
Which of the symptoms of "Signs of Someone Frighteningly Obsessed with LOTR" (see TORN) do you display?
I still use preciousss a lot. Hey, at least I stopped calling people "fool of a Took"...
What made you obsessed wit LOTR?
Strangely enough, it was Tolkien's language. Try reading out random passages of LOTR and it just rolls off the tongue like wine.
How many friends do you have who are also fans of Tolkien?
I have a whole RL org full of these nuts. And I call them friends...
Who among your family members are Tolkien fans?
Both my sisters have read it.
Do you have an LOTR poster or any Tolkien related poster hanging in your house?
Very guilty. Teehee. I have the scenic posters (considered rare) from FOTR and Two Towers (TT), and some battle scene poster from ROTK. I also have a framed Frodo, won from a raffle.
Do you collect books of Tolkien (different editions)?
Nope, but my friends do.
I just remembered that I do collect books, sort of, because there are a couple of Tolkien books on my shelf I haven't read yet. This includes The Atlas of Middle-earth, The War of the Ring, and Roveramdom.
Are you a member of other Tolkien related group / book club or mailing list?
Guilty as charged...
Have you cosplayed a Tolkien Character? Who was the character you portrayed?
I do not cosplay, although I did buy some absolutely beautiful fabric for an Elven cloak, a Halloween project that I never finished.
Do you use tolkien character's names in your yahoo / gmail / multiply / blogger / facebook/ plurk / twitter etc. accounts?
They are already engraved on my knives. You can't get dorkier than that.
Do you collect Tolkien books or memorabilia? What do you have in your collection?
I have a couple of free toys, the posters, and a Tolkien shot glass a friend gave me.
Are you a toy collector? do you have tolkien inspired toys?
See above.
Have you ever named your pet from a Tolkien character?
Hahaha. No.
If you have children, are their names Tolkien-related? If yes, what is their names/nickname?
Nope, but one of my friends named his kid Rohan.
If you have names for gadgets (computer, camera, etc) have you named them after Tolkien characters?
Nope. But I always did want to have a palantir.
Did you write a Tolkien-related paper for any of your classes?
Nope.
Have you attended any Tolkien-Related Festival or convention?
Does the Ren Faire count?
Who is the biggest Tolkien nuts / geek you know?
Rashbold, who is working on an Elvish dictionary right now
Are you in favor of del Torro directing The Hobbit movies?
If he respects the Middle-earth mythology, why not.
And the obligatory question... Is Legolas(in the movies) cute?
Really, I never understood what the fangirls saw in him. Who wants to date an elf who runs around Middle-earth with his dress clothes and a spare tiara in his backpack?!
