Yeah, well... maybe guilt and something else thrown in. Like a character death, or at least, a character's loss of power.

Right now, I'm toying with another crack theory... that Byakuya's grandfather didn't die (when did someone die in Bleach?!) but was incapacitated somehow while fighting against the newly-made Vaizards. This is a sort of tragedy that would make people go into exile. Because you didn't kill 'em, you just helped take away one of their unique aspects.

I know some people predict the death of Byakuya's grandfather by the end of the arc. But I'm not convinced, and here's why:

You see, it's the same person. At least I believe it is. So if he was around to meet Rukia -- hell, he's still around in all the omakes! -- then he didn't die. He just got really old and frail in the span of 100 years, unlike that youthful trio of Unohana, Ukitake, Shunsui. So what happened to him? Possibly something very bad, enough for him to resign as captain and just hang around the Kuchiki mansion.

LALALALA! I seem to be generating more crack scenarios that usual.

Thanks for reminding me about that one, Steffi, that Rukia didn't know about Urahara being anything other than a shady dealer. :) I have yet to read a good fanfic on their first conversation. It's a cool thing to speculate...

Oh, but Laurie dear, they don't have to think gloomy all the time! It could very well just be that the old man's (or if he hadn't, then the clan - we know how clannish the Kuchikis can get, don't we?) decided that his young(er) grandson's finally passed that stage of childishness and can level-headedly inherit their Noble House and the 6th Division. 'Cause if it really were that something bad had happened to the Ojii-sama...

... Don't you think that the Kuchiki house has enough of its share of drama? First the death of Byakuya's parents, then his marriage to Hisana, which led to the adoption of Rukia, and the (almost unbelievable) fact that Byakuya has risked his life twice for Rukia, a non-bloodkin... All that scandal... tsk, tsk. I do feel sorry for the Kuchikis, don't you?

There's so much about Rukia's past that we aren't absolutely sure yet. (You've heard of the King's-Palace-Survivor/Runaway theory?)

Night, Laurie-twin!

P.S. Got my postcard yet? (^.^)
