Dedicated to my stalker. Hi, kaya, if you're reading this. Now who's watching who?! Me!adam_eppJanuary 3 2008, 07:40:42 UTC
Ach, I don't think I could read that series if it has art like that. In some Shoujo (I'm looking at you, Fruits Basket!), I just can't stand the art. Need... crazy...realistic...proportions:
As for shoujo, I've been liking the series Special A...so far, in the first six volumes. For whatever reason, I tend to start hating most Shoujo, female leads (I'm looking at you again, Fruits Basket!). Why do they have to be so ridiculously self-sacrificing? And often dumb? And, yet, every guy ends up liking her, anyways, instead of some other female character I find superior. I find it all very vexing and difficult to relate to either gender, as a result.
...Whoa. Holy rant, Batman.
I'll give you an unusual recommendation. Angel Densetsu, by Norihiro Yagi (the dude behind Claymore, my current Shonen favorite). It's mostly comedy, but has a bit of romance in the later volumes. It has some of the worst art I've seen in a manga in the beginning, but it improves immensely as the series goes on. Maybe you would like it. Link:
In response to virkallea above me (aka Jaime...I think), Howl's Moving Castle is the Miyazaki film I would recommend dead last. Also, my sister says the book is way better. And she's a geek, so you can trust her.

Hi Kaya! Look! I'm replying to Adam! OHHH.
*chokes on own sarcasm*
I haven't watched/read Fruits Basket and I have no intention of doing so. Lots of complaints about that series, even from a girly-girl friend of mine who's into shoujo.
About girls being ridiculously self-sacrificing, though, it might be a cultural difference. Asian girls are still mostly encouraged to be self-sacrificing and sweet and all that goody two shoe stuff.
On every guy falling in love with the dumb, self-sacrificing female lead, that just doesn't happen in shoujo/josei... look at all the romance novels in the library! It's actually gender conditioning. Those books are just telling females all over the world that if you're patient enough, or you're good enough, any grumpy, toxic troll who happens to be good-looking or rich will finally take notice and suddenly undergo a transformation. Sheesh.
So why do I enjoy this sentimental twaddle when I obviously know better? A total lack of romance in my life has driven me to it. Hell, at this point in time even a dancing mail box can make me squee:
