Happy Superbowl weekend everyone! Roomie B and I tried to figure out which team I should root for depending on which state was closer to Maryland. But when we actually had to look at a map...well, it just seemed smarter to finish off my Govt. and Media homework :oP
So last weekend was all about Santa Monica and haircuts; yesterday's quest was to find tea and cupcakes. Food Network once had a Bobby Flay episode featuring the "best cupcakes in LA", which were apparently at this place called
Aunty Em's Kitchen. This is a tiny little shop next to a Korean Adventist church in Glendale, which is also near one of the few
Teavana shops in California. I'm not sure if they're the best cupcakes in LA - we may have to do more research - but I can say the red velvet with cream cheese icing that I had was pretty close to divine. With Tim Reese in tow we wandered all over Glendale, chatted up pretentious tea salespeople, ate cupcakes in the sun, crashed from the massive sugar high, and generally had a fantastic time of it.
Occasionally we get tickets from Ba-Flo for free movie screenings, so after cupcakes we went and saw
In Bruges. It's a very dark comedy that has you laughing one minute and crying the next and subtly uncomfortable the entire time. The acting was really good, even if I disagreed with the hellishness of the titular location. It kinda reminded me of going on vacation with my brother :oP
Then in the evening we discovered what IC postgrads do with their time - that is, sing karaoke in sketchy underground hideaways in Chinatown. The three of us along with Evan and Dave drove down, picking up one Miss Sally Lok on the way. I hadn't seen half of those kids in years, and I definitely hadn't imbibed beer that crappy in years. It was awesome hanging out with kids I'd looked up to as a wee TV thing and seeing what they've been up to (everything from producing to unemployed). We stayed out until about 4am, heard some hilarious music, and I still don't have much of a voice left.
Next weekend: San Diego?
