GETTING down on bended knee to pop the question is hard enough to do without thousands of people watching.
But that's exactly what happened when Sayeed David asked his girlfriend Shella Thomas to marry him at Federation Square yesterday.
To Mr David's delight the love of his life said yes, providing the modern-day Romeo with more than a little relief to match his joy.
Thanks to a new interactive media service on the giant screen at the Melbourne landmark, all sorts of text messages can now be shared with everyone in town through SMS FedTV.
The 31-year-old Optus worker was the first person to use the new system, but his then-girlfriend didn't know it.
"I was really lucky she wasn't holding anything
valuable in her hands because she just dropped everything when I asked her to marry me," Mr David said.
"So I definitely got the shock and surprise value I was after."
Though the result was a happy one, the love-struck Melburnian said it wasn't easy to express his feelings through text.
"It took me a couple of hours to figure out what to say in that small message," he said.
"And organising a ring at such short notice (five days) wasn't easy so I just got a temporary one -- it's about 10 sizes too big for her, but we'll go shopping on the weekend."
Access times for SMS FedTV will be published on the Federation Square website.
