Brief summary: From the author: "While the Indy is in dock for repairs, Captain Pellew and his two junior lieutenants are kidnapped by a British renegade. As the Indy's crew searches for its missing officers, Pellew and Hornblower work to escape -- and Archie Kennedy finds himself facing his greatest fears - and worse, the fulfilment of his dearest dreams." This fic is beautifully written, very exciting, digs deeply into Archie's character and how he handles some painful trials he has had to suffer.
He was at the gratings -- well, that was no surprise. He had offended the bastard; aboard any ship, flogging was the most likely punishment for a variety of offenses. He'd taken a couple of beatings aboard Justinian, when Simpson had contrived to shift the blame for his own transgressions. But there was something peculiar about this arrangement.
He frowned through the metal latticework, and realized that he was wrong-way on, facing the maindeck ... and suddenly Horatio was thrown against the other side, so their faces were only inches apart. In the light of a bright three-quarters moon, Kennedy saw that they were lashing him to the grating spreadeagled, so he couldn't move at all. Looking past his friend's shoulder, he saw two more sailors bring Captain Pellew on deck, also blindfolded, stopping some twenty feet away.
Kennedy had been half-expecting reprisal, but he had never imagined this. Twisting to look over his own shoulder, he saw Adrian watching him avidly, waiting. His gut tightened. Well, with forty or fifty men to one, it had always been a foregone conclusion, hadn't it? "All right," he breathed, his mouth dry. "You've made your point. I'll do it."
"Of course you will." Adrian's smile was ripe with self-confidence. "I never had any doubt. But this is a consequence, not a threat." He raised his voice. "Let these gentlemen see what's going on so they understand how very serious I am."

misskittie79Characters: William Bush, Archie Kennedy, Horatio Hornblower. (H/A pairing)
Prompt: 26, Death
Rating: PG-13
Length: Long, 4000+ words
Brief summary: Archie has survived his wounds and is back in London, but Mr. Bush notices that he suffers greater burdens in life than he would have in death.
In any case, I learned from Admiral Pellew that Hornblower had left the city, and had gone to stay at the London estate of one Earl of Edrington. That struck me as odd, as Hornblower never seemed the type to accept charity, and I noted that the Admiral was less than pleased with the arrangement.
I had a cousin in London, who had been prompting me to visit for months now. Since my transfer to Renown I had not found the time, of course, but now I found that the journey inland would serve two purposes.
While on the road I wondered if this Earl were Kennedy’s father, he had spoken of a family estate in London, after all -- Kennedy had spoken of many things in passing, the theatre, the actors he knew, and I began to see that I knew more of Kennedy than I realized. Hornblower proved more a mystery, but I knew enough to suspect he would be audacious enough to go to Kennedy’s family and present the grim news personally.
