*points to self* That chart would be very handy indeed.
I've only seen The Birds (it was in English class - I think we read the short story so we decided to see them film also), but I really want to see Psycho.
You will have a copy when I'm done, most definitely!
I enjoyed Psycho, but I keep thinking they'll be scarier. I suppose scary back then was suspenseful whereas today is "Hey, let's shove as much blood and gore into this as we can! Plot? Character development? Pffft, who needs that when we can make films like Jeepers Creepers and Cabin Fever?" I like the older ones best. I can't handle gory-scary.
Ooh, I HATE gory-scary. Unless it's Lord of the Rings, because the blood's all black and doesn't look like gore. :D
The Birds was scary to me despite the lack of blood because of all the suspense, really. Old movies were so awesome at timing, atmosphere and the overall effect rather than the full-on blood-and-guts thing. I think I'm just grossed out by that.
Ugh, I hate gore. And anything with knives. I cannot watch anything with the slashing and stabbing noises. I can handle LoTR gore fine, it's more people-gore I can't stomach.
I had to turn off the tv somewhere after Cathy(?)'s birthday party, I was exhausted. I'll have to actually rent it someday and finish it.
*after a seagull hit the door* Oh, poor thing, it must have lost its way in the dark. Melanie: No it didn't, Annie. It's not dark, it's a full moon. *they stare at each other* Duh duh duuuuuuh! Foreshadowing!
Yeah, they're held to such a high esteem that you think they're going to be completely terrifying. They're still good, but there is a little breath of relief. I watch The Shining last night and was laughing more than I was cringing and I'm terrible with scary movies. But again, it was more suspense than anything.
I really jumped when the gull all of a sudden dive-bombed her head when she was crossing the lake early in the movie.
Anthony Perkins in Psycho was so good, I loved him. He had this weird innocent serial killer thing happening.
I think suspense has to be worked a certain way, where the ending doesn't just ruin everything. I mean, like Signs was really suspenseful but when it got to the end, I was sort of disappointed.
I got freaked out when she went into some deserted place (was it a shed, or the attic, or something) and got totally bombarded by birds.
All I know about Psycho is that infamous shower scene, haha. I think I heard somewhere that for his black-and-white movies, Hitchcock used chocolate syrup for blood. :D *random*
Yeah, the ending of Signs was... pretty bad. I remember seeing all the perfectly cut out moons and stars in the wall and just went "Pfffft!" and kind of stopped caring.
I didn't get to that part! It sounds awesome, though!
The psychiatrist at the end with his explanations kind of made me laugh. The actor was on Bonanza a couple of times so I was all excited.
He could get away with using chocolate sauce. With it running through water you'd never tell.
I think it was in the Universal Studios tour, where they show you the places that Hitchcock used, that I heard that. It probably had something to do with the thickness of the syrup, so it could flow all slow and dramatic-like.
I was laughing at how ugly the aliens in Signs were. And thinking, So this is what I've waited the whole movie to see?
Psycho's on my must-watch-with-a-buddy list. Because I'm too much of a wuss to watch it alone, and I think my parents wouldn't be interested.
They might! It's their generation. I have a huuuuge list of movies to watch but I don't know if I'll ever get to them all! The best I've seen lately were Psycho and Howl's Moving Castle
Howl's Moving Castle!!! I loved that movie (or what I've seen of it - the disc that I got it on broke and I couldn't watch the last 15 minutes or so, argh!) ♥ Did you watch any other Miyazaki films?
I'd have to ask them. I don't actually know my mom's movie tastes very well, and my dad likes action/any movies that have special effects. My mom gets very emotional at Korean dramas, though, so I don't know if she can handle Psycho. ;)
No, I haven't! dulcinea_lj who put me onto Howl has told me to watch Spirited Away. Is that the same director? I really want to see that one. I loved Howl. Christian Bale was the perfect voice dub, in my opinion, but I haven't watched in the original language. I usually like to see how they're done with the original voices too.
My Mum's always telling me "Oooh, Lauren, you have to watch that one! Do we have that? Are you sure we don't? I thought we did..." x 1 000 000. My dad's the exact same as yours! So's the brother.
Ooh, yes! Aside from Spirted Away, he directed Castle in the Sky, Whisper of the Heart, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service. I'm pretty sure he had others, but those are the ones I've watched, and I love them all! And the soundtrack is pretty, too! I'll upload them for you when I get back from dinner.
I didn't watch any of them dubbed, I was too afraid they'd be ruined. But if my dad ever buys another copy of Howl, I'll check it out.
My mom's totally clueless when it comes to current movies; my dad's the new movie maniac. But sometimes he decides to buy new movies just for the special effects. I had to pull him off Aeon Flux, that futuristic sci-fi flick based on some MTV series. D:
I think they had an awesome American voice cast. Lauren Bacall was the Witch of the Waste!
Yeah, I didn't hear very good reviews of that one but I haven't seen it. No good? By dad will buy some that are just awful. I don't want to be a jerk, but sometimes I wish he'd ask Elli or I first. The last one he got was "Sahara" which was laughably bad.
Usually, my dad makes good choices, but yeah, sometimes you just wonder what he was thinking. I know he bought Electra, which made me go WTF?, but I don't remember if that was the last bad egg.
I didn't actually see Aeon Flux, but the whole concept of Charlize Theron as a superhero from a MTV show made me cringe. I'm pretty sure it didn't fare all that well in the critics' eyes, either.
If the price of the DVD goes down, I think I can get him to buy Howl.

I don't even remember than happening! I was so freaked out that I was watching a Hitchcock movie that I didn't absorb much. D:
