i just received an email from lauren's friend, anne. in case it was not sent to someone who reads her journal, this is what it says:
I just got back from spending the week-end in Galveston with Lauren and she asked me to send an update to everyone.
She and her cousin Mike have broken away from the original group, which is dwindling fast. Some of the crew that I met this week-end have been working on FEMA contracts for 9 weeks now and still have not been paid. Many have traveled away from families, obligations, and a couple of them were chatting to me about how they missed their young children, so it’s been pretty tough on everyone. Lauren keeps receiving promises that the “check is in the mail,” but who knows when they’ll get it! Of the original crew who left from Denton, only a handful are left, and most are scattered around Louisiana.
I really like the crew that she’s with now, and appreciate the great care that they’re giving to Lauren and Mike. They think the world of Mike and Lauren and really look after them. Lauren looked great - she’s tan, “muscled” and pretty thin. It just seemed strange to see my girlie-girl with broken off fingernails and scratched up hands and arms. But she’s happy, learning a lot, and saying that this is the experience of a lifetime. Her crew is from Michigan, California and Colorado - a pretty rowdy bunch, but they are all good guys and committed Christians. One of the guys has a girlfriend who joined them this morning from Michigan, so I’m glad to see another woman with the crew.
After two weeks in Beaumont, and a week-end for R&R this week-end in Galveston, they have headed out to Lake Charles, Louisiana. One of the crew, John from Michigan, is the owner of a roofing company. He landed a contract for over 200 houses, so it looks like they’ll finally make some good money. I saw a lot of the blue tarps in Galveston this week-end - quite a number of devastated properties there. These guys, who do this for a living, are pretty disgusted with FEMA and will be the first to tell you that the tarps are a waste of our taxpayer dollars.
Again, Lauren asked me to send an update to the list that she gave me before she left, and I send my apologies for taking so long. Keep them all in your prayers - they are all great guys and I really appreciate the respect and care that they are showing my loved ones.
