Last night was not very fun :P
We had a huge storm and i was watching a movie which was pretty stupid really. Then a huge crack of thunder came and the power went off in my street and Dad came running in saying that outside our house there were power lines down.
There were three lines down all over the street, and our house is directly in front of an intersection so no cars could drive through the intersection. But you couldn't see the lines, they weren't very visible and they were on the footpaths as well.
So my Dad gets on this bright yellow raincoat and says he is going to warn drivers away. And I'm like: 'shit! Don't get electrocuted!'. So I suggested moving my car to block one of the roads onto the intersection and putting my hazard lights on.
So I did that. This was not so easy, as it was appalling rain, you could not see two feet in front of you, let alone drive, and I was trying to avoid power lines as well. So I managed that, but was soaked through to the skin in a second. This was slightly upsetting as I had spent a couple of hours on a piece of body art earlier that day that was washed off in a second (I took photos though, they are at the bottom of this post.)
Then I got the other bright yellow rain coat on and stood on the other side of the intersection and waved people with traffic officer arm motions away from the lines. This was hard, as people didn't see me very well for awhile and an old man almost ran me over (seriously, I had to jump out of the way, then he came at me again and I had to hit his bonnet with my hands, he was pushing me back towards the power lines). And people kept abusing us for being in their way!
A neighbour put her car at another point on the intersection, and you would not believe the stupidity of people who tried to get around! They mounted the footpath or a traffic island and drove straight for the lines till we yelled at them and got in their way which we had to do quickly whilst avoiding the lines.
Every now and again some pedestrian would go to walk straight through the lines and I would have to yell at them. My mum almost walked straight through them and I screamed at her, and she was like: 'no, it's all good.' and went to keep walking because she didn't see them and thought there weren't as many so I screamed at her again and she was like: 'stop yelling at me lauren', and I full on yelled at her to go around, pointing at the lines and stuff and she eventually got it, but I was freaking.
My Dad had called emergency and energex heaps of times by now and they were always 'on their way'. We were out there for about 2 hours, and I was still soaked and freezing and my teeth were chattering, and I was exhausted from yelling at people and being abused and such.
Then the police finally came and blocked it all off for us.
I wasn't really thinking straight then, I was slightly in shock. I was so afraid of someone from my family being electrocuted. The movie I was watching when the power went off was about this guy who was electrocuted and set on fire by power lines in the rain.
So, in my soaking wet clothes and wild curly frizzy hair I drove to church (this was at about 7:30, church is finished by then). I didn't really think the whole way there, I just drove automatically and smoked liked a chimney because I was shaky. Then when I got to church the congregation was on it's last song, and I went into the bathroom and then it hit me and I sobbed. I stopped crying because I didn't want anyone to come see me, I hate crying in front of people.
I went into the auditorium and stood in the back while people were still singing. Stephen kinda saw me and waved and I stood next to Jenna. He saw that i was upset, but couldn't come over because he was controlling the lighting or something similar. Then he got someone to cover him and came over and was like: 'what's wrong?' and I said: 'nothing, I'm fine.' which is the biggest and most obvious lie and I hate that I lie automatically like that. He just gave me this look and was like: 'yeah right, nothing.' and took my arm and lead me over to a corner out in the gallery and I told him briefly what happened and then cried on him for awhile, which in hindsight is completely embarassing, but at the time it was uncontrollable.
Then we went for coffee and went down to the river and walked and hung out and I felt a bit better, and my clothes were almost dry but my bones were chilled. I couldn't get warm.
I ended up driving home at 12.30pm, and the energex people were still working in the lines, but very noisily so I couldn't get to sleep for ages. I knew i was going to call in sick for work today then, and I was told that I should to give my body a chance to get over being wet and such so I don't get sick.
And that's the end of my adventure :)
Also, this morning the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club called and I have a job! So I start my first training shift tomorrow night and hopefully will be able to work both jobs for a couple of months so I can save, and then it's goodbye IGA!
Next week I am going to Perth for a week also to be a bridesmaid at my uncle's wedding. So no work for a week!
And here are the photos of the body painting.
