So today my excursion to Fredonia was cut very very short.
Naomi, who's a good friend of mine from school, and I were on our way to Fredonia for the weekend. We had completed the first 2 hours of the 6 hour trip. She was driving, and she had asked me to turn around and get something out of a bag for her. I was going to take off my seatbelt to get to it, but I was able to reach it without having to unbuckle. So I was fishing around in the bag for what she asked for, and she stuck her hand in the bag to help me look. The next thing I knew we were driving in the shoulder. Naomi tried to put the car back on the road, but we hit rumble strips, and she lost control of the car. We swerved around, and eventually, she pulled the car off the road. We hit a mile marker, spun around, and slid down a hill and off the road. The car is totalled. There's a dent in the roof, the driver's side, and the windshield blew out. Naomi and I are fine, except for a few minor scratches from the broken glass. I have a pretty gorgeous looking bruise from the rear view mirror popping off and hitting my leg. The car was towed to a nearby garage, and my dad saved the day by driving 4 hours to get us and take us home. The only thing that scares me now is what would have happened if I took that seatbelt off to get that bag. I would have flown right out the windshield, and maybe gotten hit by the car after that. I really could be dead.
The reason I'm posting this is as a reminder of how important it really is to drive carefully, and always keep your eyes on the road, and to always wear your seatbelt, even if you're just going around the block. It really can save your life. Today it saved mine.
