a trip through Berkeley

Originally uploaded by neuralgirl. On Thursday I was in Berkeley. I ate lunch at a vegan Japanese restaurant, right next to the raw foods restaurant. I listened to my friend complain that her Prius was the same color as all the others in her neighborhood.

I walked across the campus and passed a girl gesticulating wildly as she talked into her cell phone. "... and I think that as the only candidate of color in the race, it's particularly important that you address..."

Two guys passed me, lost in earnest conversation. "... if you're really serious about transgressing gender boundaries..."

I passed the edge of campus and headed down Telegraph Ave. On the corner, a girl with dreadlocks was playing the recorder, providing accompaniment for a boy who was rapping about the Nintendo Revolution (I guess Wii didn't fit his rhyme scheme).

Just before reaching the carcass of the former Cody's Books, I passed a vacant lot with a coat of arms style graffito that had probably been left by some Berkeley toughs telling a rival gang to stay off their turf: the sign of the Knife and Carrot.

berkeley, carrots, photos, travel, funny
