I guess I have that look? Or, you know, I'm just a woman at Diesel Cafe, which raises the priors.

"Excuse me," a cute, androgynous woman says, interrupting my exciting thesis work. "I don't mean to be presumptuous, but we're having this party this weekend, and I wanted to invite you to join."

She hands me an index card. It's a handwritten invite for a party for queer women (and friends). She explains that their printer broke before they could get the fliers finished, so they're just handing out individual invitations. And that this is just her and her queer roommates throwing a party -- it's not affiliated with a school or group.

I am sort of baffled by the idea of going around randomly handing out party invitations to people I don't know, but I could imagine maybe thinking it was an okay idea if I were new to the area and trying to meet people (I'd be too shy to actually do so, though). Also, I don't know if she was handing them out to all women at Diesel, or just the ones she found hot, or approachable, or ones who pinged her queerdar, or what. I have different feelings surrounding some of those possibilities (e.g., I'm irritated by the idea of weeding people out who don't seem superficially hot enough). Handing them out to all women seems closest to just having a flier up in the first place, which seems a bit crazy to me (as an introvert who gets shy when there are too many people I don't know around) but not like a bad thing to do.

Anyway, the mechanics of invitation-targeting aside, there's something a bit charming about getting a hand-delivered, handwritten invitation to a party, with various details scribbled in as afterthoughts. Maybe I'll remember that for future parties. Not that I throw very many parties. Nor do I plan to attend hardly any between now and June, while I'm writing my thesis. Speaking of which... back to that. (It's going well, when I don't spend too much time goofing off on LiveJournal. *grin*)
