The time has come to introduce yet another fabulous debut author, Sarah Maclean, author of THE SEASON. She grew up in Rhode Island, where she spent much of her free time bemoaning the fact that she was more than a century too late for own Season. She lives in New York with her husband, their dog, and a ridiculously large collection of romance novels. She is currently working on a series of regency-set romances to be released in 2010 from Avon/HarperCollins.
Sarah agreed to answer a few questions for me. Read on and laugh!
You mention on your website that you believe cupcakes have magic powers-which begs the question. What sort of powers?
Cupcakes are little, frosted bundles of happy. Have you ever eaten a cupcake and been sad? Try it next time you're sad. Have a cupcake. Instant happy. This, to me is grounds for the pronouncement of magic.
LOL!! I will try it. What is your favorite kind of hat to wear?
I have several that I rotate in and out...but my favorite by far is a black and white fedora that my husband bought me for my 29th birthday. I feel AWESOME in that hat. Very fly. Yes. I said it. Fly.
If you could visit any place and time for a week, where and when would it be?
I don't think I could honestly pass up a trip to Regency London. Considering how much time I spend thinking/dreaming about the Regency, it's hard to imagine going anywhere else? So, yes. I'd go to London, May 1817 (After the war is over, before George IV becomes King). And I'd make sure I was stocked up on gold coin and lovely dresses...so I could rock my first ball. :)
What elements make up a perfect writing space for you?
I listen exclusively to classical music when writing. I find it easier for a few reasons...first, no lyrics to distract me. Second, it makes me feel closer to the time period to be listening to the things my characters would have been familiar with.
Do you ever experience writer's block?
I experience writer's block all the time. The trick is to push through and keep writing. Even if it's garbage. At least you can go back and edit...which is so much easier than staring at a blank page. That said, I work best under pressure...so I tend to get less writer's block as deadlines loom.
Thanks for stopping by, Sarah!
Here’s a bit more about THE SEASON:
Seventeen-year-old Lady Alexandra Stafford doesn't fit into the world of Regency London - she's strong-willed, sharp-tongued, and she absolutely loathes dress fittings. Unfortunately, her mother has been waiting for years for Alex to be old enough to take part in the social whirlwind of a London Season so she can be married off to someone safe, respectable, wealthy, and almost certainly boring. But Alex is much more interested in adventure than romance.
Between sumptuous balls, lavish dinner parties and country weekends, Alex, along with her two best friends, Ella and Vivi, manages to get entangled in her biggest scrape yet. When the Earl of Blackmoor is killed in a puzzling accident, Alex decides to help his son, the brooding and devilishly handsome Gavin, uncover the truth. It's a mystery brimming with espionage, murder, and suspicion. As she and Gavin grow closer, will Alex's heart be stolen in the process?
Romance and danger fill the air, as this year's Season begins!
