I know I've said a lot about critique already...but I have one little morsel to add.
As cautious as I am about putting my work out there (and getting my ego sliced in two),
I still do it. And over the last ten years, I've been lucky enough to find a few kick-ass
critique partners because of it.
And I have my love letter.
Not in the traditional sense (I'm married, sheesh!)
But when a local author of some fame offered to read my novel--someone way outside
my demographic, btw, in terms of gender, age, and genre--I accepted.
Afterwards he wrote me a letter about my novel, saying how it made him laugh and cry,
and how he wished he'd come up with my main character himself.
And that is what I call my love letter. Whenever I'm down in the dumps about my
writing, I re-read it.
So put yourself out there and earn a love letter of your own.
