Mandy Hubbard grew up on a dairy farm outside Seattle, where she refused to wear high heels until homecoming-and hated them so much she didn’t wear another pair for five years. A cowgirl at heart, she enjoys riding horses and quads and singing horribly to the latest country tune. She’s currently living happily ever after with her husband (who, sadly, is not a Duke) and her daughter (who is most definitely a princess). Prada and Prejudice is her first novel
Happy days! PRADA AND PREJUDICE is on the shelves in bookstores, and even in airports. Here is an interview with the fun and energetic Mandy Hubbard, the author.
I love the setting of Prada and Prejudice! Did you travel to London on a school trip, or another time? If not, how did you go about creating the authentic details that make your story so much fun?
Sadly, I've never been to London or anywhere in Europe! I had to do a lot of googling to come up with the details for current day London, including using some maps and images. In fact, I completely changed the description of the Prada store once I found a picture of a real one, and relocated the hotel so that it would be near the Prada store. For the 1815 version of England, I liked to play period films while writing (such as Vanity Fair or Pride & Prejudice.)
If you could visit any place and time (past/present/future) for a week, where and when would it be?
This one is probably obvious: 1815, England. Preferably as the guest of a really hot, really wealthy aristocrat.
If he has a brother, I want to come too.
Do you ever experience writer's block?
Not really. If I get stuck, I just sit down and start writing, even if it’s really horrible. Eventually that breaks things free. If you can’t think of something to write, just start going through the motions-- does your character wake up, take a shower, go to school, sit in English class? If you write all that out, chances are you'll stumble into a plot thread.
What elements make up a perfect writing space for you?
I prefer to write in my home office, with a soda and a snack. Unfortunately most of my writing time takes place on the train, or after 9PM, from the couch.
Thanks for stopping by, Mandy!
About Prada and Prejudice
Fifteen year old Callie just wants to impress the popular girls when she buys a pair of Prada heels on her class trip to London. She didn’t plan on tripping, conking her head, and waking up in 1815! Now she’s wearing corsets with her designer pumps, eating bizarre soups, and breaking up engagements. If only the nineteen year old Duke of Harksbury wasn’t so bloody annoying, she might have a little fun in Austen-Era England…
