moving to Dreamwidth for real this time

Jan 13, 2017 00:56

This post is mostly aimed at the folks still on Livejournal but I imagine some of the info might be useful to folks on Dreamwidth too.

I've had a Dreamwidth account since the very beginning but somehow missed out on the seed/permanent/lifetime/whatever accounts each time they were offered which is a bummer. (One thing that kept me at Livejournal was my permanent/lifetime account there.)

If you aren't familiar with Dreamwidth, I'd say the super short description I'd give is that it's a spiffier version of Livejournal; while originally based on the LJ code, lots of nifty things have been added. Many have written about Dreamwidth's origins and inspiration over the years, you can find some links to that stuff on the Dreamwidth wiki.

I always meant to do more on Dreamwidth & then crosspost the things to LJ, but I got lazy & didn't mess with things much.

Given the relocation of LJ servers to Russia & all that, I decided to really make the move instead of half-heartedly poking at DW from time to time. Still figuring out whether I'll delete all the things on LJ or leave some or what (for quite a few years I was regularly deleting stuff, I should probably track down those archives if I can & keep all the things together).

Gonna keep the Livejournal account even if just to read things there sometimes, but I probably won't be cross-posting things beyond this post.

Much tweaking and organizing to do. Maybe if I get my ducks in a row I'll start posting and reading things regularly again-- wouldn't that be something?

The latest Metafilter post re Livejournal might be a good place to start if you're wondering what I'm on about regarding the server move, etc.

A Guide to Dreamwidth for Livejournal Users is a very handy thing.

If you're not sure you're ready to move fully to Dreamwidth, you can still read what your friends are saying over there (even if they don't crosspost to Livejournal) by logging into Dreamwidth using your Livejournal Open ID. Here's details on how that works including what OpenID accounts can do (read, comment) versus what they can't do (post entries).

Here's a link to the "If you're coming from LiveJournal to Dreamwidth: Importing" part of the Dreamwidth FAQ for details on how to import one's LJ into DW. It's dead easy, I've done it multiple times. Big issue for me is deciding if I want to include all the things or not.

If you have concerns about Dreamwidth's security & privacy policies, this news posting from January 1, 2017 delves into that a bit.

Here are details on what you get with the free & paid accounts on Dreamwidth.

The Dreamwidth Shop wherein you can purchase paid accounts for yourself or others. Or points that can be used to buy paid account or extra icons or whatever.

(If any kind & generous soul has the $ or points & wants to purchase a Paid or Premium account for "laurel" on Dreamwidth or send me points there to use to purchase said upgrade(s), that would rock & would also mean I could import all my icons from LJ which is obviously super important. ;-p I have another Dreamwidth account too which could stand an upgrade for that matter; wish they offered a family deal, but I'm also glad to throw $ at folks providing a service I like & use, we just can't afford to do so right now.
