Let's see. Let's start by saying I'm glad it's Friday. Not that this was a bad week. On the contrary, it was a good start-of-the-second-semester week. I didn't even have any anxiety dreams (though I did dream that Rachel got a boob job).
School today went pretty well. My student aide (notice the singular) showed up today, for which I was immensely grateful. She was able to grade most of my vocab quizzes, which really frees up some time for me. I mean, really, they might take an hour, an hour-and-a-half to grade, but that's time I could be spending doing other things. Like re-organizing the file in which I'm now keeping student work - work they're supposed to keep in a special folder but which I know they're using to help one another cheat. It's a sad life.
Speaking of sad, one of my students (an adorable girl from my boring third hour - one of the few students who always has something to say - and it's always something good) stopped by my class during 6th hour to tell me that today was her last day. She'd be transferring to another school effective Monday. I was saddened. Then she came back during 7th hour to get a folder she kept in class. I wished her the best and all, and she told me that I was the best English teacher.
Made me feel good, not gonna lie.
It made me feel especially good after my 6th hour class, wherein the kids are completely resistant to learning anything I want to teach.
It's funny, though. In that class, there's one kid who's been particularly vociferous about his dislike for the class and his overall hatred for everything associated with the class. But today after school, he came into my room to ask if I had a dollar he could "borrow" so he could make bus fare. Maybe that means he knows I do care and have the students' best interests at heart.
Or maybe he knows I'm a sucker.
After school, I called up my ma. It's her birthday today. It made me feel kind of bad because when she answered the phone and I began singing "Happy Birthday," she was like, "Oh, you remembered." She said it more than once.
I mean, she's my mom. Of COURSE I remembered her birthday. I just couldn't call before then because I was IN SCHOOL. All day. And I'm sure she wouldn't have taken too kindly of my calling at about 6:30 this morning, as she works nights now.
Anyway, she hinted (read: blatantly stated) that she wanted me to come pay her a visit at work. So I did. I brought tacos. Lis came, too. It ended up being a ridiculously fun time. Maybe it was due to a touch of Friday madness or something. Everything that happened was funny. Lis and I wanted to hunt through all of the rooms for bowls of candy (my ma was working at the admin building; lots of office-types with lots of bowls of candy). My mom broke a vacuum. The student art on the walls cracked me up. I spent about five straight minutes laughing so hysterically I couldn't stand and could barely see through the tears streaming down my face.
All in all, good times.
Then, after errands, Lis came to the House and we baked a cake. In hindsight, I probably should've put in the cake before she got there so we wouldn't have to wait so long before we could frost it, but the wait did give us an excuse to watch the first two episodes of Gilmore Girls, so it wasn't a bad thing.
We had grand plans for Ma's cake. We were going to put a frog on it and use lots of green. It turned out looking like our four- and five-year-old selves were somehow magically transported to 2007 and took over the cake-decorating process. But it'll be fun.
Tomorrow night, I'm take the fam out for dinner at Outback. Ma said she wanted steak, and, by golly, steak she'll have. We couldn't do a nice dinner tonight because Ma worked till 9:30.
Anyway. It's way past the English teacher witching hour, and I'm dreading my weigh-in tomorrow. I'm considering waking up early to put in a good work out before I go in, but part of me thinks, "What's the use?" I wonder which side will be stronger in the morning?
