Chapter 1 ,
Chapter 2 The silence stretched on long after Yoochun switched on the closed sign of the shop in the middle of the day. Yunho had stomped off to the backroom soon after.
“Are we going to talk about what just happened out there?” Yoochun said in a gentle voice as he settled into a chair next to his brooding friend.
“I’d rather not.” Yunho mumbled.
“I’m sorry, that was a rhetorical question, of course we are going to talk about the tantrum you just pulled out on the sales floor.”
Before Yunho could protest, Yoochun held up a hand to silence him. “And I meant the royal we. You are going to sit here and listen to me.” He gave Yunho a challenging glare up the fox shifter stayed silent.
“Yunho, do you remember when we first met?”
Yunho nodded hesitantly.
“We were both crying our eyes out in the sandbox at the kindergarten playground.” Yoochun continued and took Yunho’s hand in his. “Your mother had just left you and your father and my father and step-mother had just had a huge argument over me that ended with Changmin-hyung being left mute.” Yoochun sighed sadly at the memory of a little Yunho sobbing his heart out. Yunho had just found out that his mother wasn’t coming back home and he felt like he had done something to have sent her away.
“All the other kids teased us and called us cry babies and we had only each other to play with.” Yunho smiled briefly, “we’ve been best friends ever since.”
“What I remember most about our first meeting is how heart-broken you looked - which is about the same look you’re wearing now.” Yoochun gave his friend’s hand a squeeze. “You’re not your mother Yunho. She found her true mate after marrying your father and having you; but that didn’t mean that she had to leave you behind and run off with him. And if you choose to accept your true mate, you won’t be betraying your father.”
“Yoochun, you know what it was like for me and my dad when she left. For him, it was like his true mate had left; he loved her as much as it is possible to love someone whether they were chosen by fate or not. They had built a home and a life together; they had a child together and because some guy with pheromones that caused a chemical attraction to occur between him and my mother it all went to hell. I will not let a fluke of biology decide who I love, I will not be a mindless idiot.” It was then that Yunho broke down into tears. It was clear that he was having mixed feelings about the whole situation. “How can I do that to my dad? Wolf shifters are all about their packs - if I were to mate with that guy I would have to live on pack lands and away from my father’s den. How can I leave him all alone in his old age?”
“Yunho, I know that you don’t want to leave your dad and I’m not telling you to run away with this Junho guy, but your father wouldn’t want you to sacrifice your own happiness for him because of what your mother did; especially not when Mr. Right comes along.”
“But, I don’t want to change like she did. My mother became a whole different person when she met her true mate.” Yunho’s voice cracked. “I don’t want to lose myself in another person and forget about my family.”
“I know you’re still hurt by what she did and you want to be cautious. I understand it all too well.” Yoochun’s own mother had abandoned him on his father’s doorstep after he had used his demon powers as a toddler and almost burned down their house. Living with his father and step-mother left him longing for affection; which he would only receive from Changmin and only in the older boy’s cold, yet quietly possessive manner.
Yunho lunged at his friend and wrapped the smaller man in a rib-crushing hug. “Oh Chunnie, I’m so sorry! How could I forget about you?” Yunho sniffled as he invoked his friend’s childhood nickname.
“It’s ok Yunnie,” Yoochun said returning the hug. “Being pounced on by your possible true mate is a huge fucking surprise, you’re allowed to be a little self-involved right now.” Yoochun chuckled as the fox wiped his nose on his shoulder.
“You are disgusting; I don’t know why anyone would want you!” Yoochun teased as he playfully pushed his friend away and pulled a tissue from the box on the desk.
“It’s my animal magnetism, don’t be jealous!” Yunho pouted as he wiped his face.“Are you worried that Changmin might scare Junsu off?” Yunho asked from under his lashes, not sure if his friend wanted to discuss his hyung.
“I don’t know.” Yoochun scrub his face in annoyance just at the thought of Changmin’s antics. “At this point, I’m starting to be grateful that Changmin has run off a bunch of losers. I guess if Junsu can stand up to and put up with Changmin I might as well give him a shot.”
“I will, if you will.” Yunho said quietly. “You give Junsu a shot and I’ll give Junho a shot.”
Yunho’s words sent the pair into another round of tears and hugging.
“Is there a reason why you’re closed in the middle of the day and crying like a bunch of hormonal girls?” Changmin’s dry tone rang out in the room before he appeared, leaning against the office doorway.
“Is there a reason why you broke into our shop in the middle of the day when you should be in your own office?” Yoochun replied, not giving his brother more than a glance over his shoulder before he cleaned up Yunho properly and not with a shirt sleeve.
“I could feel your distress.” Changmin said with a shrug. “I put my busy schedule on hold to check up on my dear little brother and what do I find? Him having a share circle with his bestie beastie.”
“No one asked you to keep tabs on my emotions.” Yoochun snapped back.
“Well, I’m rather regretting it now. This is no way for a demon of your stature to behave. I can barely look at you.”
“Great, you can go fuck off then.” Yoochun quipped.
“Not until you tell me what’s gotten you two so upset.” Changmin said and when the pair of teary men gave him a questioning look he explained, “My curiosity has been peaked.”
Yunho and Yoochun shared a look, as if they could read each other’s thoughts - well Yoochun actually could - and they decided to come clean now instead of having Changmin snoop through their subconscious when they were asleep as he had done when they were teenagers and tried to hide secrets from him. Besides, having Changmin test Junsu now and getting the disappointment out of the way would be easier than dragging this whole ‘mate’ business on.
“Two wolf shifters came into the shop today and proclaimed that Yunho and I were their true mates. So, you know we had feelings about it.” Yoochun explained impatiently, not thrilled to be sharing with his older brother.
Changmin looked from his brother to Yunho in shock, showing an honest reaction. “So, one shifter said you were his true mate and the other one said Yunho was his true mate?” Changmin asked, needing clarification. The two seated men nodded in confirmation.
“Just who are these wolf shifters?” Changmin demanded, pounding a fist against the door frame and cause a crack to form down the wood. “Where are they now?”
“They said they were named Kim Junho and Junsu and I kicked them out of our shop like I’m about to do to you if you don’t calm yourself down.” Yunho huffed, annoyed by the demon’s theatrics. Normally, no one would dare to speak to Changmin in such a disrespectful manner (except for his precious Yoochun) but Changmin had always ignored Yunho’s tone when the fox got snippety.
“Well,” Changmin said as he ran a hand through his hair to smooth any errant locks, “I’ll just have to see how true they really are.” Changmin vanished with his statement, always needing to have the final word.
After a moment Yunho cleared his throat, “So, that was weird even for your brother.”
“I know, it sounded like he was almost jealous.” Yoochun agreed. “Maybe he has a thing for you.” He grinned and wiggled his eyebrows.
“Yes, Changmin is in love with me.” Yunho tried to keep a blank face, but couldn’t hold it. “Come off it Yoochun, Changmin has never even give me a second thought; I’m pretty sure he thinks I’m your pet. He was probably freaked out by the possibility that this Junsu guy is the real deal; shifters don’t just randomly confess to being someone’s true mate, we take mating seriously.”
“I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what kind of stunt my lovely brother pulls this time.”
With twin sighs, Yoochun and Yunho finally stood and decided to go back out onto the shop floor and face the day once more. Yunho flipped on the open sign and Yoochun went about straightening one of the clothing displays. The bell on the store entrance jingled, signally that a client had walked in.
Before Yoochun could turn around and greet the client a pair of arms wrapped around him from behind and he was pulled against a firm body.
“Forgive me Yoochun! I was stupid to get scared off by your brother, please take me back!” Jaejoong pleaded. He turned a shocked Yoochun around in his hold and passionately kissed him
Coming upon the scene, Yunho shouted out his friend’s name as the bell rang again signally more customers.
Yoochun was ready to send Jaejoong flying out into the street when a growl filtered through the air and Yoochun found himself on his ass while a wolf pinned Jaejoong to the floor.
“Jaejoong, meet Junsu - Yoochun’s true mate.” Yunho said with a grin far too cat like for a fox.
