Real Things: Accept No Substitutes

Oct 11, 2011 19:18

So, yeah, anyway, I've been sort of swamped, drowning, la la whatever, which explains why I haven't posted here in a couple of weeks. Neveryoumind.

I've been thinking about Real Things, about a refusal to accept substitutions.

This came about because I was listening to Fitz and the Tantrums singing "Don't Gotta Work It Out," a song best ( Read more... )

I do like their sound, although I'm dubious about the lead singer. ;-)

Hurrah and thanks for the link, and hugs and hurrahs for you!

The Real Thing for me will always be ethnic food. In my own case, it's vinegar and pepper barbeque, but also Provencal lamb dishes, Northern Chinese hotpot, Oaxacan mole, West African groundnut stew...wherever, it's so incredible when it's cooked there, and never the same anywhere else, even with cooks from the country and supposedly the same ingredients. Something rich and deep is always missing. Terroir seems not to be an affectation.

I believe in terroir with wine, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's important with food too.

What a great answer! Thanks!

Hmm, real things.

Lumiere and Adirondack acrylic paints (I've been painting bits of things today), Japanese papers, my good jewelry pliers and favorite scissors and bone folder.

Kate Bush, KT Tunstall, Regina Spektor.

Bombay Sapphire gin, Berenger white zin, Twinings Darjeeling tea.

My favorite 19th-century authors.

I seem to be brand-name-dropping. Sorry about that.

John Prine's version of Angel from Montgomery. I love Bonnie Raitt, but as far as I'm concerned it's his song.

Hellmans mayonnaise. Butter and sugar corn on the cob. My great-grandmother's dust-pan. (It's solid metal and heavy enough that it could probably be used to decapitate a vampire if necessary.)

Also, Leonard Cohen.

I love all of your things, but I know just what you mean about those old metal dust-pans!

These are great, thank you. :-)
