This morning -- despite the pollen count being somewhere around the CODE RED YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO BREATHE TRUST US mark -- the Blonde Dog of the House and I spent a goodly bit of time in the backyard.
(First came my trip to Lowe's garden center, whereupon I wandered the aisles and whimpered at the profusion of options and my lack of knowledge. Then I hefted four bags of river rock into my shopping cart and whimpered about something quite different.)
The Blonde Dog was pleased to be outside, even daring several times to put a paw across the threshold of the open gate and then whisk herself away when she realized I could see her -- "No, no, L, I am being good, promise!" While I put in my new gardenia, she hovered. While I put in my new Mexican heather, she danced elsewhere.
But then...as I was putting in my new Double Knock-out rose along the fence, out of the corner of my eye I saw her climb up the jagged remnant of oak, all that's left of a mighty tree which fell some years ago. Her undulating back end was signaling so much joy that for a moment I thought she was going to wriggle herself right into the oak-root crater on the other side.
She held on, though, and then lifted her head and woofed gently. "See!" she said. "See!"
A small brown lizard ran over her paw and down into the crater. She woofed again and headed after it.
Yes, lizard season has officially begun, and the Blonde Dog of the House is ready.
May your new season bring you just as much joy!
