Blossom Dearie

Last September I wrote this blog post about the jazz-cabaret singer Blossom Dearie, with accompanying link to the Schoolhouse Rock video for "Figure 8."

Today I link to Terry Teachout's obituary for her. It includes more links and a wonderful Youtube link to her "Surrey with the Fringe on Top."

I first heard her singing Rodgers and Hart (who wrote many of my favorite standards). Her light voice, crisp diction, and mix of irony and sincerity perfectly suited Lorenz Hart's sad-funny lyrics and Richard Rodgers' melodies. Since then I've explored more of her work, although I'm by no means an expert, but those are still the qualities I connect to her. These are qualities I admire very much.

Blossom Dearie, 1924-2009.
