My mother sent me the handwritten copy of my great grandmother's memoirs. 40 pages long, Ruth, my great grandmother tells about her grandparents, her parents, of her life and her children.
5 pages in she briefly mentions being used for the Binet-Terman tests. A study of bright students in the bay area to make an IQ test.
13 pages in she writes about my grandmother, "Laura was born in the hospital which was built by the college....Dr. Beardsley used the twilight sleep method, so I remember nothing about the birth. I do remember being somewhat irrational when coming to."
An article about the twilight sleep method from 1915 has a discussion of doctors telling their experiences with the method:
DR. T. D. ADLERMAN: In the New York hospitals, in Bellevue and some others, they have proven that some cases have been followed by insanity when the Freiburg system is used. There were four cases that I knew of, consequently, those who are using this particular remedy would better look out a little and go slow. I also know of a few cases where the children were rather backward in mentality.
