some dumb survey

What is your full name (confirmation included if you've ever been Catholic)? Laura MacLeod

Where were you born? Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead, NY

What do you consider to be your hometown? Laurel, NY

Where do you live now (if not there)? Bloomington, IN

What is your favorite place to visit? Anywhere in Maine, or any large metropolitan area (Chicago, New York, London, Paris, or even places I haven't been)

Where is your favorite place to live (whether you've lived there or visited there or not)? I like living in Bloomington. It's my own place.

What is your earliest memory? Playing in a sand pit near the woods in my back yard, and my mother telling me to stop because I'd get ticks. I think I was 3.

What is something that's happened to you recently that you think will become a good memory? I guess my most recent trip to Chicago was pretty memorable, in a good way.

What about a bad one? I will quote Callie on this one: "Any and all faux pas I have made in the last month. I relive them constantly." And cringe.

What was your favorite song when you were 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and now (if you're older than that? 5--"Man in the Mirror" (Michael Jackson). 10--probably something by En Vogue, embarrassingly enough. 15--"Tweezer" (Phish). 20--"Romeo and Juliet" (Indigo Girls covering Dire Straits). 25--"Two" (Ryan Adams).

If you had to pick a song that sums up your life, what would it be? Oh, geez. Perhaps "Only the Good Die Young" (Billy Joel). I take it as a warning.

A book that sums up your life? Mrs. Dalloway.

What is your favorite thing to do with free time (if you happen to have the luxury of having any)? Hang out with nice people and drink tea and talk.

Assuming you've been in the workforce awhile, what's been your favorite job and why? I liked working at the Mattituck-Laurel Library. I miss the friendly atmosphere, and leaving behind my job when I went home for the day. I can't mentally disengage from my current job at 5 or 6 or whatever ungodly time I leave the office. And sometimes I bring the piles home with me.

What is your dream job and why? Editor-in-chief of Food & Wine magazine. Because I'd get to schmooze with people-in-the-know, and get taken out for great food and drinks, and still be a publishing hotshot.

When was the healthiest you've ever been (both mentally and physically)? High school. All down hill from there. But I'm getting better. My body's in better shape now, and hopefully the mind is next.

When was the unhealthiest you've ever been? The first couple of years out of college. I wasn't exercising very much, was eating and drinking plenty, and was being pulled in a few different directions (socially and romantically). So I was a little confused, on top of being slightly chubby.

What's your motive? Pleasing other people.

What's your poison? Wine. Or that blue stuff at the Bluebird night club.

What is your quest? A better me.

What is your favorite color? Green.

What are your most and least favorite foods? I like too many things. Hummus, pizza, fresh fruit and vegetables, filet mignon, pancakes & bacon with real maple syrup. Least favorite: shrimp.

Who in this world has affected your life the most and why? My sister Deborah. She was really supportive to me when I was young, especially when I was looking to go to college and needed help getting to all the different schools I was accepted to. Since she and her husband moved into their house in Cutchogue, their home has always been open to me. So it's where I call home.

Assuming you've been in the dating force awhile, who that you've dated has affected your life most and why? Ned. Because I've moved to places for him, and stayed in places for him. And that has altered the course of my professional and educational careers. In a good way.

Who that you've dated do you think understood you the most and least and why? Ned on both. We have lived under the same roof for a few years now, so of course we know each other very, very well--our habits, likes, dislikes, wants, needs, etc. But recently I think we make assumptions, or take each other for granted, and so we aren't really connecting on that deeper level.

Same question, of the people you haven't dated? People who understand me the most? My mother, Natalia, Jane, Valerie, Bill, Andrew. People who don't? Sharon, Sarah, my father.

Are you capable of having purely physical relationships/encounters? Why or why not? I don't think so. I can get emotionally wrapped up in the people I find physically attractive. And when I connect with someone emotionally, I am more inclined to want to know them physically. So they go hand in hand for me, and I couldn't have a purely physical encounter.

Are you capable of plotting revenge? Carrying out the plotted revenge? Why or why not? I don't plot revenge very often. It's a waste of time because I'd be too chicken to carry it out. Also, I don't often need to seek revenge. People don't tend to do me wrong (knock on wood).

Do you agree with the author's viewpoint? Why or why not? (Ok just kidding.) I just don't get it.

What is the best thing you've ever done for someone you know and like? I don't know. Move to Bloomington for him.

What is the worst thing you've ever done to someone you know and like? I dumped TJ after he declared his love for me in a very expensive way.

What is the best thing you've ever done for a stranger? I don't recall. Maybe picked up the money they've dropped at the register of a store. Or something like that.

What is the worst thing you've ever done to a stranger? Vandalized their mailbox.

What is the best thing someone has ever done for you? Quoting Callie, "A lot of people have been more nice to me than I deserve."

The worst thing someone has ever done to you? Wow, I am getting really tired of this survey. I can't think of a damn thing.

Are any of your grandparents still alive? What are they like? N/A

Are you more like your mom or your dad? I look a lot like my dad but act like a combination. I think I'm a worry wart like my mom but have a quirky side like my dad.

If a big life change had to happen to you right now, what would you want it to be and why? I would want to move in one direction or the other on an issue that has been bugging the hell out of me for months.

Do you smoke or drink (or both)? Have you ever tried either? I don't smoke, and have never tried it. I enjoy drinking when the occasion calls for it.

What about any substances of the less-than-legal variety? Nope.

Do you exercise? If you do, what do you do? I lift weights at the gym, run on the treadmill, and today I tried an exercise video at home. Because it's cold and I don't want to leave my house.

Are you competitive? If so, in what? I am not an outwardly competitive person. I try to do the best I can and sometimes that involves trying to be better than others, but no one would know it. I try to kick butt at work and in school. Otherwise, in my personal time--I don't care if I lose at Monopoly.

Are you religious in any way? Can you sum up what you believe and why (or if you don't, tell us about that)? I believe in people. I don't know anything beyond people.

Do you think you will ever be married (in either a traditional or non-traditional sense) or have children? If so, what do you think these people (your spouse, kids) will be like? Marriage and children, I hope so. I hope my spouse will be loving and gentle and generous and smart as heck. And I hope my kids will be just like me :)

What do you plan to do when you retire? Bake pies and cookies for my children and grandchildren. And run marathons.

How old do you think you will be when you die? 82. Just a wild guess.

How do you think it will happen? Heart disease.

Does the thought of it bother you? Yep.

Do you wish this survey would have ended three questions ago and thus on a positive note? No.

Okay, okay. Tell us a happy thought. My hair is pretty. And I'm going to take a bath now.
