Well apparently my txt post from the ER yesterday didn't work. Here's what's going on. Everything seemed to be going swimmingly with Nicholas until Tuesday night when we got a call from the Minnesota Health Department. One of his newborn tests came back positive - he has
Congenital Hypothyroidism. So yesterday we went to the clinic for a bili test, and then we were going to go to the mall to look at new computers.* The clinic called back and said to go to the ER at Children's Hospital, cause his bili was too high. So poor Nicholas wound up lounging under the lights for awhile (we just got back home about an hour ago). Apparently, among other causes, his hypothyroidism can cause jaundice. So now he's gotten 2 doses of the synthetic hormone, which he has to take every day for the rest of his life. It takes like 5 days for the hormone level to normalize, and he's still sooooo sleepy. Normally that would be cute, but I am so worried about him :( My poor baby... I'm also worried about his hearing, because he hasn't been startling at loud noises like Peanut did. According to the endocrinologist we talked to, sometimes deafness can go hand in hand with the hypothyroidism.
Peanut is going to Grand Forks for a week, starting tomorrow. Poor Peanut too :( He'll have fun though, I'm sure with his grandparents all showering him with attention.
*My computer is dead. Completely. When it rains it pours, right?
