Lost Boys 2 - The Tribe - FAIL

Well, ... it was bad. Was it colossally bad? No. It was just plain old bad. If you think about it in relation to the first movie, it was REALLY bad, but thinking about it in relation to all vampire movies I've seen, it was pretty average. Definitely better than some of the ones I've seen, and WAY better than, say, John Carpenter's Vampires. So yeah.

It seemed like it was trying way too hard to be the first movie. The beginning scenes were basically the same. The characters said a lot of the same lines, word for word. Which was bad, but when they said new lines, they were even worse. They tried to inject humor into the movie, which is I think where the original shined, but most of the jokes weren't really funny. Instead of laughing at the things that were supposed to be funny, I found myself laughing at the fact that the head vampire, played by Keifer Sutherland's half-brother, looks in his vamped-out state like one of those Geico cavemen. The main protagonist looks a lot like Jason Patric in the first movie, only not as hot.

There were plenty of boobs this time around, but the big sex scene was totally ruined by the fact that Geico caveman was involved, and of course the slaughtering of Cry Little Sister. What a shame, I mean if they didn't want to use the original song, then write another one for christsake! There were a couple of brief moments where some of the style and ambience of the original were hinted at, but these were fleeting.

It did have some of What Not To Do on a Motorcycle, which wasn't bad. And it had Corey Feldman. I couldn't decide whether that made me feel more nostalgic or sad. It think it was mostly sad. His character was the same as in the first, of course, with many of the same lines.

And speaking of sad, yes Corey Haim has a little cameo at the end, during the credits. I never watched that Corey reality show because I didn't have cable when it was on, so I wasn't prepared for how many miles of bad road he's looking like these days. Wow. I'm sure they put him at the end like that because he's so fucked up, there's no way he's reliable enough to actually be IN a movie. There are 2 "alternate" endings that have more Haim in them, plus a brief side-view of Jamison Newlander (Alan Frog). There's no reason to watch both alternate endings, as they are just 2 takes of the same scene. Corey Haim has a couple of short lines, and he struggles to get them out. Even though I never liked Haim that much, it was still very, very sad.

The vampires were WAY too easy to kill! They were too easy to kill in the original, but this one was worse. They waited until there were 15 minutes left of the movie, then went into the vampire lair and dispatched the entire gang in 5 minutes. The head vampire, who they save for last and should be the hardest to kill, one would think, was probably the easiest. Yes, they made quick work of the Geico caveman. And that was that. There was no "twist" like in the original, where OMG he's not the head vampire! or anything like that. Nope. It was just over.

Then they tried to have the "quirky" family member say something funny at the end. This family member is their aunt, who I think is supposed to be a grandpa-like quirky character but this fails and she just comes across as a bitch.

So anyway, as a sequel it was pretty bad, but as a stand-alone movie you might want to Netflix it - just don't expect a lot. And don't run out and buy it. Save your money.
