Oh my god! This was one of the best races that I have ever seen; so much action, so much fun. And only seven finishers, we haven't had nearly that few in a while.
Australia's always exciting; the first corner is fast but thin, walls with not many run off areas means we always get a safety car or four, and everyone's a bit rusty, there's some rookies who overcook it a little.... lots of safety cars, a few crashes, it's always quite eventful. So to lay all of the action at the feet of traction control, or rather the lack thereof, is somewhat short-sighted (*cough*areyoulisteningJamesAllen*cough*). Indeed, some people went out with broken cars/engines, which is not due to traction control.
But certainly some of the incidents were due to the loss of traction control. And wasn't it wonderful?! I'm all for it; we can see more of the driver ability. If the rest of the season is like that then, wow, it's going to be fantastic!
I was so, so excited for Nico! THIRD! YAY! He was obviously so damn excited, as well he should be, he drove an outstanding race (in a race where finishing was a special thing in itself). His podium was adorable, he thrust that trophy up in the air like he'd won the damn championship. ♥ And Nico and Lewis hugging and bouncing around pre-podium. CUTEST THING EVER. Oh, boys! ♥
I was so excited for Lewis too, a great start for his season and he made it look so easy. A good start for Nick Heidfeld too; those BMWs are looking very competitive again this year, here's hoping that they can have the top step of the podium sometime this year.
I was encouraged by the fact that Rubens finished; the Honda's look better this year than last, but then that's not saying much because, surely, the only way is up for that team. But Rubens looked good. It's a shame that Jenson went out on the first lap, I would have liked to have seen him and his Honda not suck, and in a race where so few people got to the end, maybe he could have picked up some points.... alas, it was not to be.
Heikki Kovaleinen did a good job, it's so good to see him in a top car and playing with the big boys :) Kimi was really fun to watch - there's no doubt that he was pushing, pushing, pushing all the way around because he took quite a few detours. But for providing such entertainment, I think he deserved some points so I was glad he was able to get something, even after his engine blew, especially as his non-finish means that he will be able to change his engine without penalty.
I thought Sebastien Bourdais was awesome - I was very, very impressed by him. I know that he's been very successful in the US, so he's used to racing and he's an old hand at this. Some people (Jacques Villeneuve) have come across and done very well over here, but some people have come across and struggling, staying firmly down the back with the also-rans, so experience doesn't count for everything. Sebastien is looking good, though!
This really was such an awesome race. And I am so pleased for Nico!
It's shaping up to be an exciting season. More like this please!
