a cat tale (not tail)

Anyone with a cat knows that they love a good hiding spot. Paddington hid under the bed for the first few months we had him, and of course he loves cupboards, and boxes.. and now he loves to sit under the loveseat, or sometimes he'll even burrow himself under the sofa cover (between the loveseat itself and the sofa cover) and sleep there for hours while I'm working. He has been known to hide under the blankets on our bed too. In a small apartment, there's not a lot of hiding spots, and I've pretty much figured out where he likes to go.

But the other day, I discovered how sneaky he can be.

I was probably busy in the kitchen - but I noticed that I didn't see Paddington anywhere. I looked under the sofa, under the bed, in the front window, and even opened some cupboards. He was nowhere to be seen. Usually if I can't find him, I just rattle his dry food container, or get out the bags of snacks, and he'll come running. But I shook and shook and called and called...and he did not come. I actually started to worry, maybe he was stuck somewhere... and then I started to hear a rustling sound over near the loveseat. Sure enough, he had found a new hiding spot, and he was feeling pretty proud! Apparently there's a piece of fabric covering the bottom of our loveseat, which is loosely tacked on by velcro on each corner. This cover must be to protect the springs of the cushion or something - but I didn't know it was there. Somehow, Paddington had loosened one of the corners (or it was already loose and he just discovered it), and had burrowed himself between the bottom of the loveseat and this piece of fabric, and he was just "hanging out" in his new hiding hole! I am surprised that the fabric didn't completely tear with his weight! I didn't want this to become a habit, so I grabbed him and removed him from his spot, and boy was he angry with me! he turned around and tried to bite me, and he got really aggressive. I had to use some duck tape to secure the corners (the velcro is pretty weak, and it doesn't really fit well), and now I only have to worry about him hiding under the sofa cover (and getting cat hair all over the fabric!)

Aren't cats fun? Paddington surely keeps us entertained daily!
