This Month's Project

So I decided that I was going to use all the credit on all of my stray MetroCards. Every penny.

My life was flush with MetroCards. In every pocket of every coat. In skirts. On my desk. Shoved into drawers. Each one with some nebulous amount of credit on it, less than the cost of a single fare. Just enough to earn me a solid, angry beep from the turnstile.

INSUFFICIENT FARE.

So I took each card. There were twenty. Thirty? Twenty. And I did the math for every single one. And I used every penny of credit. Fussing with the machines. Doing the math on my iPhone because I can't do it fast enough in my head. Holding up the line. Adding $2 here and $1.45 there. Just enough for a single fare.

And then I used each card. And then, satisfied with the $0.00 balance, I threw each one away.

I have one left. And this is going to be my one MetroCard. I will refill it. I will know where it is. Buying new ones is not allowed.

This is me. This is me trying to keep everything in control.
