The Presentation of Deceit of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’
Deceit is presented in many ways in the play and these include self deceit as well as deceiving others.
Don Pedro plans a massive deceit which involves Beatrice and Benedick and he manages to get everyone involved in this plan that will hopefully make the couple realise that they love each other by making it seem as though the other loved them. The reason that Don Pedro may have got the idea that they loved each other was because Beatrice and Benedick argued so much and this could have been the result of a long standing argument about a previous relationship. Beatrice said ‘…marry once before he won of it of me, with false dice…’ which suggests that they were in a relationship before which turned sour and therefore they fight a lot. It may also be the cause of the fact that when they fight they are very witty with one another and therefore know how to return each others remarks and turn them around. Benedick says ‘Well, you are a rare parrot-teacher’ to which Beatrice replies, ‘A bird of my tongue is better than a beast of yours.’ Which again show how well they know each other and all of their characteristics but also how to hurt their feelings if they really wish to.
It seems as thought they also still care about each other because they are so willing to requite each other’s love when Don Pedro is carrying out his plan. When Benedick has found out that Beatrice supposedly loves him he says, ‘…love me? Why, then I must requite it.’ This suggests that he really does love Beatrice because he does not even have to think about what the consequences might be but quickly decided that the love must be requited. This suggests that he was already in love with her and just needed a little push in the right direction to make him realise this, or maybe just act upon it.
This is the same case with Beatrice because she also decides that it must be requited when she says, ‘And Benedick, love on, I will requite thee.’ So it seems the same in her case that both of them just needed a little push in the right direction to make them realise how much they care each other, and also so they will stop arguing.
Beatrice and Benedicks self deception because they pretend they don’t care about one another.
Then Don Pedro’s plan to get B+B together.
Then contrast of H+C because they are not perfect for love but are for the patriarchal society - same class, background.
Claudio deceives self that he doesn’t love hero
Don Pedros deceit to Leonato because he pretends that he likes him but after Heros disgrace he calls L ‘a silly old man’
Don John’s deceit in which Hero is disgraced.
